Sports federations in the North West got together with the Department of Sport and Education on Tuesday, 21 June to discuss ways forward that will be beneficial to sports growth in the province in future.
The newly appointed MEC for Sport and Education in North West, Mr Jonas Sello Lehari, was the main guest at the meeting and introduced himself to the federations present. He highlighted his ideas and plans as MEC, with an emphasis on sports development in schools for a number of sports as well as a legends programme to assist federations.   “We need to use sport to better social cohesion and nation building. The important thing is to work together. We must adopt policies to allow sport to rise,” he said.
Lehari also stated that funding is one of the major struggles for the federation and said this needs to be alleviated. He suggested meeting each of the federations individually to discuss their various challenges and concerns.   “Support is crucial and municipalities must also form part of this. A close bond is very important to reach various communities. Another important aspect is to incorporate former sporting heroes and legends from North West into the programme that are in tune with the province,” he added.
In closing, Lehari mentioned the possibility of a sports indaba in Potchefstroom where blueprints for a short, medium and long-term plan for sport in the province can be discussed at length.
