Central University Of Technology Winter School
The Winter School Project is a partnership between CUT and the Free State Department of Education (FSDoE). This school is hosted at CUT under the auspices of the SAA. The project is supported by Standard Bank South Africa and has been running since 2010.
It is offered to grade 12 learners in 10 subjects namely, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design with CAD, Engineering Graphics and Design without CAD, Computer Applications Technology, Geography, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Learners are required to select any three subjects from the above mentioned list. The project assists learners, a majority of whom come from disadvantaged communities in the Free State to improve their chances of success in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
In 2024, the project benefited a total number of 1021 learners-majority of whom were from the Free State province and a handful came from outside the province (Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng). Enrolment to the project takes place in April/May annually.
The project employs tutors from surrounding schools as well as some CUT lecturers and FSDoE officials to provide lessons to the learners. During the course of the project, learners attend plenary sessions where CUT Faculties share information on the different programmes offered by the university. Furthermore motivational speakers are also invited to talk to the learners on a variety of topics.
