North West University in Mafikeng

With its strong ethos of community service and skilful blend of academic and research programmes, the Mafikeng Campus embodies the NWU’s commitment to being locally engaged, nationally relevant and internationally recognised.  Situated in Mafikeng, the capital of the North-West Province, the Mafikeng Campus is the second-largest of the University’s three campuses. Students from over 24 countries were among the 9 000 students enrolled in 2013 at its five faculties, viz. Education; Law; Agriculture, Science and Technology; Human and Social Sciences; Commerce and Administration.
The Campus has one Research Focus Area, Material Science Innovation and Modelling (MaSIM) and two niche Areas, Food Security and Safety and Population and Health.  Some of the academic programmes offered at the Mafikeng Campus are available nowhere else in South Africa.  There are three Centres of Excellence.  The Dale Beighle Centre for Animal Health Studies offers two qualifications that are unique within the School of Agriculture.  The Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) is the only programme that has accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the country.  The Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology (CARST) is a pioneer in applied radiation studies.
Tremendous progress has been made with research output.  In the past five years the Campus has increased the number of units in accredited journals from 10.08 units in 2007 to 196.72 units at the end of 2012 with a permanent academic compliment of 237.
The Faculty of Commerce and Administration’s courses are recognised by professional bodies such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) and the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP).  Amongst all other programmes, Transport Economics and Logistics Management is one of the flagship programmes within the country.  The Faculty of Law prides itself as a regionally competitive centre of legal teaching and learning, research and community engagement in the quest for justice and democracy.  Our Community Law Centre offers free legal aid and assistance to those in our surrounding communities that would otherwise be denied access to justice because of non-affordability of legal counsel.  The Faculty of Education and Training has positioned itself to addressing the critical shortage of teachers in the country as well as Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of those who are already qualified in quest for improving quality of education in this country.

In community engagement, the Campus has entered into various value-adding partnerships to promote the economic development of the Province. Current partners include the Mafikeng Industrial Development Zone, the Industrial Development Corporation, the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, and the Umsobomvu Youth Fund.

Beyond the laboratories and lecture halls, Mafikeng Campus students are active culturally and on the sports field. The Campus has distinguished itself in music, choral and multicultural drama, and has a thriving, well-resourced Soccer Institute that is helping to develop soccer in the Province and the Country. There are also 17 different sports codes on the Campus.  The Campus offers decent accommodation to its students, which promises a suitable learning environment during the students’ period of study.
