Rhodes University School of Journalism Community Engagement

Journalism and the education of journalism and media studies exist within a broader social context. Keeping this in mind, the School of Journalism and Media Studies has been involved with ongoing projects within the community of Grahamstown, engaging with people and places, and learning from one another. Read the stories of our involvement below.

Future Journalists Programme

The Future Journalists Programme (FJP) aims to bridge the gap between what we learn at university and the working world of journalism. This initiative was started in 2007 as part of the Highway Africa Conference. The Highway Africa Conference is known for being a platform for African media practitioners to debate issues concerning journalism and new media, and the FJP gives students the opportunity to learn about and be more critical about topics surrounding the industry. The participants conduct interviews and write stories throughout the Conference. The points covered are not included in general curricula and are intended to be helpful for up-and-coming journalists as they provide them with knowledge and opportunities they can use when stepping into this profession.
Students from the 2013 Future Journalists Programme speak out about the experience.
