Researc2h has shown that we are naturally creative. The traditional schooling systems have suppressed this creativity with many failing to offer art or design as a subject. This program is designed for individuals who have not taken visual arts (EGD) at Grade 12 level, and who desire to learn about the fundamentals of art in order to promote their creative potential. It is an introduction to the world of art history, an opportunity to learn about the various design industries, and a doorway to learning the skills required to creativity. In successful completion of this course, students are able to apply for other programs offered at Style Design College which require a EDG pass.
Contextual Studies:
Students are introduced to the time-line of art history. Focusing on the history and development of art technique beginning from Prehistoric art through the Renaissance and continuing into the Post-modern era, students will learn the effects of each era on society and the changes art incurred. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the context of design art in history, the way the art culture survived when technology emerged, the way history shaped the future of design and the way design causes societal change.
Industry Awareness:
Learning from the creative industries where design knowledge is applied in the business context, we will be looking closely at design in the areas of photography, graphic design, fashion and interior design. Students will learn the technical processes of camera use, and photographic theory. Focusing on the graphic design principles students will learn how the industry incorporates photography for graphic design purposes. The introduction to fashion design will include different genres in fashion, and a project that includes incorporating ideas and design concepts. In looking at the interior design aspects, students will have the opportunity to learn and apply their design ideas for interior purposes.
Art Theory Practical:
The aim of this subject is to teach individuals to draw and feel confident in the skills of drawing. This course is structured in such a way that teaches students how to observe well in order to draw well. Students will learn about the use of line and how important it is in defining the shape of objects and the use of positive and negative space. Students will learn about tonal range and value, and how to model light and dark tones, how to set up a “still-life” drawing space, choose good compositions using a viewfinder, and the relevance of perspective, and space within a composition. The course is divided adequately to show and describe the processes of creating technique in mediums such as pencil, charcoal, ink, and pen, as well as the techniques used for colour. With monochromatic (single colour) materials one will learn how to create contrast and form. Progression through the modules will explore the techniques of colour pencils, marker pens (important for drawing in any field of design), and paints. By the end of this subject students will be able to draw confidently using different techniques, be able to render the values of the objects being drawn, choose a composition showing perspective, contrast and space, effectively mix and apply colour using different colour materials and techniques.
