The medical aesthetic industry has shown tremendous growth over the past decade, with medical aesthetic clinics offering non-invasive rejuvenation treatments, increasing in number. Medical practitioners are relying on Somatologists to complement their offerings in medical aesthetic clinics and consequently Somatologists perform a large array of treatments under the supervision of medical practitioners.

The Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics has been developed to address the needs of the Somatologist working in this specialised field.

Recognition Of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process of assessing the knowledge and skills of a person against a qualification or part thereof. The process involves the identification, assessment and acknowledgment of knowledge and skills obtained through informal, non-formal and formal learning.

Students may provide evidence of prior learning for which they may receive credit towards the qualification. Evidence may be presented in the form of portfolios of evidence or any other form of appropriate evidence, which may include verified accounts of previous relevant work experience.
NOTE: Entry into the Advanced Diploma of Dermal Aesthetics is not automatic. A limited number of students will be accepted and selection will be on the basis of academic performance. Working experience will be an added advantage.

 Mode of Instruction

The Advanced Diploma in Dermal Aesthetics is a distance learning programme enabling the student to continue their employment while completing his/her qualification. In order to support the student in acquiring the necessary advanced skills, the programme will include various learning opportunities:

Online/On-Campus Contact Sessions:
Students will be able to take part in the session either via live streaming or on-site at one of the two campuses. These contact sessions will vary, depending on the specific subject with 6 x 2-hour contact session per subject per academic year. Sessions will be presented one evening a week from 18:00-20:00 after which it will be uploaded to Moodle where students can access the lesson at a later stage if they were unable to attend the session or require a repeat session.

On-Campus Practical Block Sessions:
These sessions will consist of a maximum of 5 days at a time and will be hosted at the Stellenbosch and/or Pretoria campuses. Students should commit to attending 4 block sessions per year as it is compulsory for the student to attend these block sessions. This will encompass practical and interactive sessions.
Independent Study:
With the aid of study guides and textbooks and carefully developed assignments and class tests, the student will be guided through the course in order to prepare them for the summative examinations at the end of their studies.
All learning material including study guides, class tests and assignments are designed to assist the student to work through the course, which will be accessible via the Moodle platform.
