Keeping this in mind, it is also very important to ensure that you can manage and pass the number of chosen modules. Each qualification page provides guidelines on how to do this successfully.
Calculate your study fees
If you’re registering via the web or the self-help terminals at a regional centre, you can choose your modules and calculate your fees during that process. If you’re registering by post or by fax, you should calculate your fees and minimum payments before you register. Either way, please work through this section carefully to ensure that you can successfully complete the registration process.
Complete & submit your registration
Successful applicants and re-registering students must register to study through Unisa in 2024.
- Applicants (new applicants & Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualifications) can only begin the registration process if they have received confirmation from Unisa that their application for admission has been accepted.
- Re-registering students can register for the 2024 academic year during the relevant registration period once they have received their registration details from Unisa.
- Should you wish to change to an alternative qualification, please apply for the alternative qualification during the next application period.

- I’ve chosen the modules for which I want to register based on the study time I have available and the number of modules I need to pass per year / over 2 consecutive semesters.

Registration options
Unisa’s online registration process is quick, simple and accurate. This is why we recommend this option. When registering online, you’ll be prompted when information is missing or incorrect, helping you to ensure that you include all the necessary information when submitting your registration form.
Pay your study fees
All fees must be paid into the correct bank account with the correct reference number in order for the university to process your registration before the relevant closing date. For your convenience, we provide a variety of different payment methods.

For your convenience, we provide a variety of different payment methods. In the case of electronic transfers, please ensure that the reference field is completed correctly. No cash or cheques will be accepted at any Unisa office. Cash can, however, be paid into the university’s bank account at any Standard Bank branch
Payment problems & cancellation dates
Dishonoured payments
If a cheque or credit card is tendered in payment of the minimum amount which must accompany a student’s application for registration, and payment of that cheque or credit card is later returned unpaid by the bank, the student’s registration will be cancelled by the university. Such registrations will not be reinstated unless the student’s full tuition fees for the year or semester are paid in the form of cash, electronic transfer or bank guaranteed cheque into the university’s bank account, or via debit card payment at any of the Unisa regional offices before the relevant closing date.
On re-registration of the cancelled modules, the student’s account will be debited with a once-off administrative levy, per dishonoured transaction.
Overdue accounts and accounts handed over for collection
No student will be allowed to re-register with the university until all outstanding debt of previous registration periods has been settled in full. Students with long overdue balances on their accounts may be handed over to a third party for collection. Any collection/legal costs that may arise from the account being handed over will be for the account of the student. Payment or arrangements thereof of overdue accounts handed over for collection should be made with the collection company concerned.
2024 cancellation dates
A student who voluntarily cancels his or her registration of a module will forfeit either a part of or the entire study fees paid as indicated below. If you wish to cancel your registration, you must do so by the following dates:

After registration
Once you’ve received confirmation of your registration, you need to register on myUnisa, the university’s online student portal where you can download your study material, including your tutorial letters.
Preparing for your studies
Create a study space
Creating your study space is a good place to start, somewhere in your home that’s quiet, that’s your own, where you won’t be disturbed. It should have good natural light and be well lit at night too.
Schedule your time
Get yourself a year planner, identify the times you’re not working at your job (if you have one). Mark the events (social and otherwise) that you know you’ll have to attend. Mark your family time, the time for all your other obligations and the time you need for yourself. In this way, you’ll start to identify your ideal study times, and the instances where, perhaps, you need to sacrifice a little social time to get in those extra study hours. Remember: semester modules require between 6 and 8 hours per week, and year modules between 4 and 6 hours per week.
Start building a support community
Building a support community is one of the most important requirements for any Unisa student. It’s a network of people who can help you on your journey. Talk to your family, talk to friends, let them know what to expect. Having the understanding of the people in your life means having their support too. If you’re working in your field of study, then the workplace will be a great source of support. People with experience in your field are invaluable. Talk to your colleagues and your employer. This will also help when you need to take time off for exams, for instance.
Find a mentor, someone you know and trust, who can advise you through the course of your studies. Ideally, he or she should have studied too, they should understand the challenges; they should know you and your situation well enough to resolve conflicts when they arise; and importantly, they should be someone you trust.
Register on myUnisa
Once you’ve received confirmation of your registration, register on myUnisa, the university’s online student portal. Then you won’t need to wait for your study material to be sent to you. You’ll be able to download everything, including your tutorial letters, from myUnisa. Registering on myUnisa is one of the first things you need to do once you have your student number.
Activate myLife e-mail account
The university provides all registered students with a free myLife e-mail address. It is your responsibility to activate your myLife e-mail account as soon as your registration has been finalised. Your myLife e-mail account will be the only e-mail account recognised by Unisa for official correspondence to and from the university, and will remain the official primary e-mail address on record at Unisa.
All official communication from Unisa will be sent to your myLife e-mail account. Other additional communication channels may be used from time-to-time, but the university will communicate with you primarily via your myLife e-mail account.
