About University of South Africa (UNISA) Library

As the largest academic library in Africa, we are also one of the best-endowed with information resources, information technology and expert staff.
The Unisa Library came into being in 1946 when Unisa introduced distance learning as a mode of tuition. The last 50 years have been a period of rapid growth, with the printed book collection now totalling over 1.5 million items. In addition, we stock over 300 000 other items as well as 4 000 current periodical titles.
We subscribe to an increasing number of electronic journals (e-journals). Both the e-journals and the growing collection of electronic books (e-books) are available to Unisa students and staff online 24/7 via the internet, regardless of the user’s physical location.
We encourage Library clients to use the Library as a space conducive to research and study.

From personal librarians for postgraduate students to free training on the proper use of library resources, the Unisa Library strives to provide all its users with a variety of services that meet their information needs.

Lending services

Any registered Unisa student, with the exception of certain certificate and programme students, may borrow library material.

Training

The Unisa Libraries offer training in the use of library resources to enable clients to find information easily and speedily. Training is offered free of charge to registered Unisa students and staff.

The Library assists registered students with access to Library electronic resources via wifi (on-campus) on their electronic devices. Students can also access Library electronic resources when they are off-campus.

Archival and special collections
