Border Aviation Club and Flight School Instrument Rating

The instrument rating allows you to fly in weather conditions where visual reference to the ground is not always possible. Control of the aircraft, including navigation and landing procedures can be conducted by using the cockpit instruments as your sole reference. The instrument rating is also a requirement for the ATPL.

The instrument rating is a must-have for any professional pilot, but also increases the safety, skills and discipline of any private pilot

  • Requirements

  • Valid PPL or CPL
  • Valid night rating
  • Valid class 2 or higher medical certificate
  • Valid general radio licence

  • Theory

Pass the following theoretical examinations at CPL level as per SA CAA:

  • Meteorology
  • Flight Planning and Performance
  • Radio Aids and Communication
  • General Navigation
  • Air Law and Operational Procedures
  • Instruments and Electronics
  • Human Performance

  • Practical

  • 40 hours instrument instruction time
  • Pass the Instrument Rating flight test as per SA CAA
