3 steps to becoming a hairdresser

The road to becoming a fully qualified hairdresser can take 3 years, although you can start earning an income after only 18 months.

  • Start as a learner by enrolling at Dermatech.
  • Become an apprentice at a salon and start earning a salary.
  • Qualify by taking a trade test.

Year 1: Learner

Study and practice at Dermatech Hair Training Institute.

Year 2 (1st half): Learner

Study and practice for 6 months at Dermatech Hair Training Institute.

Year 2 (2nd half): Apprentice

Apprentice & short courses

Once finished with your studies, Dermatech enters you into an apprenticeship agreement with a Salon under Dermatech’s discretion and choice and in close proximity to Dermatech’s premises allowing us to record your hours of experience. An apprentice earns an income while working under the guidance of a qualified hairdresser.

You also have the option to study further whilst in an apprenticeship agreement with a Salon. Training in Artificial Gel Nails, Bridal make-up, Lash Extensions, Holistic Head Massage, Lash and Brow Tinting etc. will be conducted on a part-time/short course base. EARN WHILE YOU LEARN!

Year 3: Qualify

You can apply to enter into an apprenticeship with a different Salon in an area of your choice. Approval of the Salon will lie solely with Dermatech, to protect you and to make sure the hours are valid.

With sufficient training, and enough hours from the apprenticeship, you may apply to the Services SETA to take a trade test. Once qualified, hairdressers can earn a higher salary.

The Trade Test

To qualify as a professional hairdresser, you must complete a trade test.  This happens at various times during the year.  It is conducted by the Services SETA at any approved trade test centre. Trade test assessors are assigned to evaluate the incumbent qualifying hairdresser who will perform a number of hair treatments in order to qualify.

You will need a certain number of hours/years’ experience and training in order to be accepted to take this test.

The Dermatech Hair Design programme prepares learners for this, and provides real-life experiences on campus so that learners can be confident when that day arrives
