Apprenticeships combine theory, practical work and workplace practice in a chosen trade field and in the case of a listed trade ends in a trade test and an
artisan certificate of competence.
The Apprenticeship Grant Policy is made available to employers to subsidise, in part, the cost of implementing apprenticeships. Funding for the training of apprentices in the following apprenticeships will be made available to employers in the form of a grant, subject to the applicants meeting the Qualifying Criteria:

The following apprenticeships have been identified as a priority through the Scarce Skills research conducted by the
FoodBev SETA. Fitter and Turner
- Fitters
- Millwrights
- Electricians
- Air-conditioning and refrigeration
- Any other apprenticeship that may be identified as a Scarce Skill and appearing on the NAMB list
Generic criteria
- That the workplace has the ability and resources to report to the relevant SETA and NAMB as required on learners’ progress, administration and attendance.
- The workplace is a juristic person registered and established in terms of any South African law.
- The workplace or site has proof of financial sustainability to deliver on the contractual arrangement with the learner in terms of the required workplace
component. - The workplace or site must be compliant with the relevant legislation applicable to the specific trade including but not limited to the
Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Occupational Specific Criteria
- The workplace or site must indicate that the programme for the structured work experience component of the artisan trade curriculum will be facilitated and mentored.
- The applicant workplace/site must have access to all physical resources to deliver on the tasks and activities as required by the relevant work experience components of the curriculum, taking into account varying contexts with different working environments.
- The workplace/site must have suitably qualified mentors for the trade/s in which workplace/site approval is sought
- The approved workplace/site must be able to sustain workplace mentoring for the duration and scope of the trade qualification for which workplace approval is sought
- The number of learner artisans mentored by a single mentor shall not exceed the numbers per mentor as defined per curriculum.
- The applicant workplace/site will be visited and evaluated by the SETA supported, by a subject matter expert
- Monitoring site visits at approved workplaces/sites should be done at least once annually by the relevant SETA.
