High-quality teaching of mathematics and languages in the Foundation Phase will have a positive effect on the child’s later development during the school career. Therefore the significance of the North-West University (NWU) Grade R qualification is that it addresses a core need in our current society, namely that of equipping and empowering the child with skills for future development.

WHAT CAN STUDENTS EXPECT?
Work integrated learning also forms part of the professional development of the student and students are required to submit a compulsory PRO2 form. The Diploma in Grade R Teaching qualification is recognised by the Department of Basic Education and enables practitioners to qualify for the relevant REQV Level 13 required for remuneration purposes.Students may apply at any time of the year. However, to write the May exams, they must be registered before end February and to be able to write the November exams, they must be registered before 30 June of the same year.

DURATION
Minimum duration for studies is three years and maximum duration for studies is five years. By completing the qualification in under five years, the student also qualifies for the relevant REQV Level 13 required for remuneration purposes.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To enrol for the Diploma in Grade R Teaching a candidate must have the following qualifications:
- National Senior Certificate with Diploma Endorsement or;
- Level 4 certificate/diploma in Early Childhood Development or;
- Level 5 certificate/diploma in Early Childhood Development.
- Senior Certificate obtained before 2008: A “D” or higher in at least four (4) subjects.

REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS NEEDED
To speed up final registration, the following documents must be supplied with your Application Form:
- Certified copy of your ID PLUS PRO2 Form (Compulsory)
- Salary advice not older than two months
- Certified copies of all previous qualifications
- Certified copy of all academic records
- Marriage certificate (if surname on ID differs from that on qualification certificates)
- SAQA evaluation of qualification (if qualification was obtained in a foreign country)
- A valid visa (for foreign students)
