VISION
To be a leader in the provision of industry relevant ICT skills training and research that enhances community advancement through the usage of key ICT technologies and services.
MISSION
To provide an advanced, well resourced ICT learning environment that addresses the needs of society. The department aims to be actively, visibly and notably involved in research at the forefront of cutting edge ICT technology. Inherently, the department seeks to intellectually, socially and materially empower the community through its research output and community engagement projects.
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
There are presently two streams within the National Diploma in Information Technology qualification that a student may opt for: Software Development; and Communication Networks. The purpose of the software development stream is to develop the requisite skills that will enable students to design and produce software products and systems to meet specified needs especially with respect to reliability, cost effectiveness and maintainability. On the other hand, the purpose of the Communications Networks stream is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, implement and manage networks by integrating knowledge of modern network technologies and protocols to create an appropriate and adequate environment of communication and information sharing.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Admission is based on the results obtained in the National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate and a selection test.
Minimum admission requirements for applicants with National Senior Certificate:

A selection test is administered for all applicants. The best performing 120 applicants are admitted to the three year programme. The next best 40 applicants are admitted to the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP).

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING
As from the 2013 academic year, students will be expected to spend at least six months in industry as part of a credit-bearing module required for the awarding of the National Diploma in Information Technology. Work Integrated Learning will be an essential component of the qualification and will enable the department produce graduates who are properly prepared for the work environment. It is an educational approach that aligns and integrates academic knowledge with workplace knowledge for the benefit of the students and industry partners. The work integrated learning component will be quality assured by co-ordinators from the university.
