Metro Systems In South Africa

The South African state-owned commuter rail service, Metrorail, is a 2,228-kilometer-long network that operates in five of South Africa’s most populated cities. The service, which is served by 471 stations, is divided into the following services –

The Metrorail Western Cape, which serves the city of Cape Town.

The Metrorail Eastern Cape, which serves the city of Port Elisabeth.

The Metrorail Kwazulu Natal, which serves the city of Durban.

The Metrorail Gauteng, which serves the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg.

METRO RAIL WESTERN CAPE

CAPE TOWN

The Metrorail Western Cape – www.metrorail.co.za – shown above, is a 423 kilometer electric light rail network which covers the city of Cape Town and it’s environs and incorporates both an urban commuter rail system and a suburban transit system.

This vast network consists of four lines which are served by one hundred and nine stations, all of which commence at the Cape Town Central Railway Station.

The Southern Line – 28 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Simon’s Town via Fishoek

The Cape Flats Line – 16 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Reteat via Maitland and Athlone.

The Central Line – 33 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Langa via Mitchell’s PlainKhayelitshaBelhar and Bellville.

The Northern Line – 48 stations between Cape Town Railway Station and Bellville, which also provides three branch lines travelling on to WellingtonMuldersvlei and Strand.

AIR

Cape Town is served by the Cape Town International Airport. The airport is served by the MyCiTi airport shuttle bus which runs a regular airport service to the MyCiTi Bus Terminal located in the Cape Town central business district.

RAIL

Cape Town’s Central Railway Station has entrances on the city’s Adderley Street and Strand Street, both of which are located in the city’s central business district. The station is served by all lines of the city metro system and Cape Town’s inter city bus terminal.

BUS

The Cape Town inter city Bus Terminal is annexed to the Cape Town Central Railway Station, both of which are served by all of the city’s metro lines.

Cape Town’s local bus terminal is the MyCITI Terminal located beneath the city’s Civic Centre building which is located between the city’s Strand Street and Herzog Boulevard.

PORT ELISABETH

The Metrorail Eastern Cape – www.metrorail.co.za – shown above, consists of two lines that serve the city of Port Elisabeth and it’s suburbs.

The Port Elisabeth Line – which consists of ten stations located between Port Elisabeth and Uitenhage

The East London Line – which consists of twenty-three stations located between East London and Berlin.

AIR

Port Elizabeth is served by the Port Elizabeth Airport. The airport is located just three kilometers from the city centre, therefore most visitors to the city take a taxi or hire car through to their ultimate destination.

RAIL

The Port Elisabeth Railway Station is located along the city’s Jetty Street. The station is served by the Port Elizabeth Line of the Metrorail Eastern Cape service and regular services through to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

DURBAN

Metrorail Kwazulu Natal – www.metrorail.co.za – shown above, operates along South Africa’s Indian Ocean coast and consists of seven lines which serve the city of Durban and it’s environs.The lines are –

AIR

Durban is served by the King Shaka International Airport. The airport is served by metered taxis for transfers into downtown Durban, which can be found adjacent to the terminal exit/entrance.

RAIL

Durban’s central Railway Station is located along the city’s Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, which is situated just north of the city’s Central Business District. The station is served by the seven local Metrorail services and national trains through to Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Pretoria is also served by the Gautrain – www.metrorail.co.za – shown on the map below, which is a commuter rail line which links Pretoria and the northern suburbs of Johannesburg with the nearby OR Tambo International Airport.

The Gautrain – 80 km – 10 stations at Hatfield – Pretoria – Centurion – Midrand – Marlboro – Sandton – Rosebank – Park – Rhodes Field – OR Tambo International Airport.

AIR

The OR Tambo International Airport is served by the Gautrain for services into either Pretoria/Central Station or Johannesburg/Park Station.

To use the Gautrain first purchase a Gold Card from one of the vending machines in the airport concourse, all of which accept either cash or credit cards.

The train station is situated on the airport’s Upper Level which is located between Terminal A and Terminal B.

The train operates daily between 05.30 hours and 20.30 hours and is served by five services an hour during peak rush hour down to two trains an hour at weekends or on public holidays.

RAIL

Pretoria Railway Station is located along the city’s Sheiding Street which is situated between the city’s Central Business District and the suburb of Solvokop. The station is served by the Gautrain service and several other local commuter lines.

Johannesburg’s Park Railway Station is the largest railway station on the African continent. The station is located along the city’s Rissik Street, which is situated between the Central Business District and the city’s suburb of Braamfontein.

The station is served by the Gautrain and several local commuter and national rail services.
