About The National School of the Arts
The National School of the Arts is a historically and culturally rich high school that was born out of the amalgamation of The Johannesburg Art, Ballet, Drama and Music School and Hoërskool Die Kruin which were opened in 1969.

Learners from Grade 8 to 12 study a full range of academic subjects in addition to their chosen speciality subjects. The specialist studies foster the discipline and dedication which are pre-requisites for academic achievement. Our excellent Matric results over nearly two decades bear witness to this.
In Grade 8 and 9 the NSA complies with the national requirement of completing the General Education and Training (GET) Examination. The GET examination covers eight learning areas: languages, mathematics, social sciences (SS), natural sciences (NS), arts and culture, economic management services (EMS), technology and life orientation. In addition all learners specialize in either Art, Drama, Dance or Music.
For the FET certificate:
Grade 10 learners (from 2024) must offer the following components:
Compulsory Specialist Subject
Two languages, one being English Home Language and the other either Afrikaans or isiZulu First Additional Language.
Mathematics.
Life Orientation,
An elective component consisting of two subjects chosen from the following: History, Geography, Life Science, Physical Science or Business Studies.

- Audition Requirements
ART
ALL GRADES
Candidates must bring a selection of their art to the interview. This MUST include the following:
i. Pencil drawing of a wooden chair from life.
ii. A design, for any purpose, in colour (eg. pattern for fabric/tile etc. or a poster).
iii. A painting – such as a landscape, portrait or still life.
iv. A self-portrait from life at least 50 x 30 cm: you may use pencil, colour pencils, paint, etc.
v. A recent selection of the candidate’s own work, including Art if done at school.
Please note that all work must be the unaided original work of the candidate and may not be copies of other artwork.

- Specialist Subjects
ART
The National School of the Arts offers the widest range of ART subjects available to secondary schools. The Art subjects are taken as follows:
Grade 8 and 9
All learners will complete modules in Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Jewellery Design as well as Theory of Design and Visual Arts.
Grades 10, 11 & 12
Learners are required to choose ONE of: Two Dimensional Design, Three Dimensional Design or Visual Arts.
It is compulsory to do Visual Art Theory or Design Theory.
