WHAT DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHERS DO
- Their main function is to take x-ray images (radiographs) of the body from which a medical doctor can make a diagnosis.
- They often go to the operating theatre and wards to x-ray a patient.
- They handle very advanced technological equipment.
- They provide a 24 hour service to doctors and patients – this means working at night, weekends and public holidays.
- They are professionals and play a pivotal role in the healthcare team.
MISSION
The mission of the Department of Radiography at the NMMU is to apply and extend knowledge by means of teaching and research in accordance with internationally recognized standards in order to:
- educate and train students for careers in radiography to meet the needs of South Africa and in particular the region;
- keep abreast with the latest developments in technology and remain in the forefront of curriculum development in radiography;
- to be active in promotion of primary health care;

BACHELOR OF RADIOGRAPHY
The Department of Radiography at NMMU applies and extends knowledge by means of teaching and research in accordance with internationally recognised standards in order to educate and train students for careers in radiography.
It aims to meet the needs of South Africa in particular the region, keeping abreast with the latest developments in technology and remaining on the forefront of curriculum development in radiography.
BRad programme
The Degree is offered over four years of full-time studies.
During the periods when students are not attending lectures at the university, they visit a training institution for their experimental training.
Students are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Upon qualification, all newly qualified radiographers are required by law to undertake one years community service.
Selection of students
A limited number of students are accepted, so there is considerable competition for a placement. Higher levels in your subject mean a student stands a greater chance of being accepted. Final selection takes place in July following informal interviews and hospital visits.

This programme prepares students for the professional field of diagnostic radiography which entails the production of x-ray images of the human body in order to diagnose disease.
Minimum statutory NSC requirements for degree entry must be met:

- Pass English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa (home language or first additional language) on level 3 (40-49%)
- Pass Mathematics on level 4 (50-59%)
- Pass Physical Science on level 4 (50-59%)
- Pass Life Sciences on level 4 (50-59%)
