SDC Short Courses Lighting Design Syllabus
This specialisation program equips students with the digital design and planning skills for creative illumination of domestic, commercial and luxury yacht design. Ideal for architects, interior designers, engineers, ergonomists and related professionals who wish to develop expertise in illumination.
Basic Course Outline:

Light Sources:
Learners are introduced to the many natural and artificial light sources, their performance abilities and manufacture. Reflectors and diffusers and the other means of lighting control and manipulation are observed. Practical experiments and assignments reveal the various characteristics of various luminaries.
Sensory Analysis:
The science of illumination is explored by examining the effects of illumination on the human sensory system and observing physiological and psychological processes when exposed to certain lighting effects. Learners are able to use this information in creating lighting atmospheres.
Lighting Design:
Learners explore the techniques of creating atmosphere using a variety of lighting sources – while considering health codes, cost and maintenance of various illumination options. Assignments present lighting design problems for hospitals, restaurants, hotels, stage and merchandising facilities. Using Practical lighting skills learners are able to solve these design problems.
Measuring Light:
Using photometric and colormetric measurement techniques we explore the methods in measuring light to achieve our desired design solutions
Green lighting:
This subject looks at sustainable illumination and the technologies available for efficient environmentally friendly lighting. A research component of this subject also enables learners to innovate and explore possible new solutions in green lighting.
