This program provides the learner with an in-depth exploration of the various subjects which established professionals in this field have established as integral and pertinent. Subjects include Design Theory; Photography; Clothing Technology; Post Editing; Fashion Styling; Business studies; Industry Practice; Internship; Portfolio. Course structures contain these subjects, which are accessed at the levels of study deemed suitable by SDC academic board.The Theory of Design is concerned with the history of fashion design in order to contextualise study. The syllabus is taught from the ancient Egyptian times to modern day culture. It encapsulates the history of design and art with specific emphasis on factors and influences at any specific time during the timeline. The Theoretical appreciation of graphic design is taught with reference to historical context to instil an understanding of relevance and influence to the contemporary world. Learners explore criticism and evaluation of art and design as the course material pin points the influences of art movements and eras. Photographic theory encompasses the historical evolution as well as its practical and technical application. Photography has become the most popular, fast developing and influential mediums of Post Modern times. It is the most immediate form of visual communication that exists. Inherently linked to technological advancement, due to the emergence of the Digital format, knowing your way around an SLR is essential for a professional stylist. The various genres of photography as well as the practical application of photography in Styling are covered extensively.
LEVEL 1
Design Theory I:
Theory is concerned with the history of fashion design in order to contextualise study. The syllabus is taught from the ancient Egyptian times to modern day culture. Methodology of history of design and history of art with specific emphasis on factors influencing design and art at any specific time during the timeline. History and appreciation of graphic design with reference to relevant history of art. Criticism and evaluation of art and design The influences of art movements
Photography I:
- Introduction to Photographic theory
- Exploration of photography as a medium for communication
- Various genres of photography
- Uses of photography in Styling applications
- Practical Photography applications
Clothing Technology I:
Learners explore Fabrics and Fibre properties and applications as well as Textiles and their properties in Photographic conditions
Post Editing I:
Learners develop a working knowledge of software & hardware used within the Graphic & Design industry. Learner will develop skills in digital communication and layout. Indicative Syllabus:

Fashion Styling I:
The aim of this subject is to develop the technical and practical skills required to practice in the industry. Theoretical terms and discourses found within mass media as well as Popular cultural awareness in industries like film, theatre music and the arts.
Hair and Make Up Design:
Learners are exposed to techniques of hair and makeup design and application. There are theoretical as well as practical elements in this subject.
Visual Literacy:
Students explore visual imagery through: Observation and perception skills.
Basic drawing skills:
Learners cover the elements of drawing and principles of composition making (design principles in the context of drawing and illustration), control of various drawing and illustration media, drawing from life, figure drawing, perspective Basic illustration skills: investigating and working in different illustration styles, investigating and working in different illustration media.
Visualisation (layout drawing):
Specific attention is paid to layout markers and related techniques, as well as visualisation and graphic presentation of concept such as storyboard technique.
LEVEL 2
Design Theory II:
Design Theory explores the role of Fashion in media and communication. Fashion branding and advertising is investigated. Research Methodologies are introduced as well as criticism and evaluation of immagery.
Photography II:
Advanced Photographic Theory and techniques is explored. Learners will gain practical experience in ‘On location’, exploration of photography as a medium for communication, various genres of photography, uses of photography in Styling applications, practical Photography applications
Post Editing II:

Business Studies II:
Introduction to marketing include definition of marketing and the influence of marketing on our daily life composition & characteristics of the marketing environment Marketing segmentation, target marketing & product positioning Market research as well as Market forecasting, Innovation in marketing and Branding.
Fashion Styling II:
Continuous project-based assessment, against defined outcomes, resulting in marks and credits for every project. Final Portfolio in the form of a Fashion Show Set Design: Students are exposed to techniques of creating visually appealing sets in terms of the specific brief. Learners are also encouraged to go out on location and taught to deal with the working conditions.
Multimedia Application:
Learners explore the options of styling on a range of multimedia platforms.
Conceptualisation:
Through the use of sketching and annotations students are taught to conceptualise their own scene of a shoot.
LEVEL 3
Industry Practice III:
- Running a business – how to start and run your own design business
- Starting your own business Basic Bookkeeping
- Client Correspondence
- Contracts
- Financing a business, handling finances and managing money, vat and income tax

- Legal matters
- Exploration of different employment opportunities
- Costings, Quotations and sourcing
Internship III:
The Internship programme is developed to give learners a working experience within industry. Learners are encouraged to complete a 3-8 week internship. SDC monitors every student and awards credits based on an Internship report, presentation and company feedback. The training should include exposure to all facets of design, from sourcing work, meeting with clients, problem solving, design work, final application, site meetings and general administration tasks. The training must include analysis of good examples of existing design work and exposure to the management of a project, The work should be completed under the supervision of a qualified designer. Documentation of the entire process must be recorded, both written and visual.
Portfolio III:
The portfolio is assessed against its assessment criteria, by the tutor, one internal moderator and at least two external moderators, one of whom is a competent design academic and one a respected practitioner in the graphic design industry. A significant exercise which demonstrate capability and competence, a collection of selected practical and theoretical projects from the course of the year. Print as well as digital portfolio which displays the strengths of the students and entails a clear and solid identity.
Design Theory III:
Theory is concerned with the history of visual communication – the social, cultural, economic and technological influences on visual communication and design and the people involved, with specific reference to the means of expression, at any time during history. Research methodologies and practices Methodology of history of design and history of art with specific emphasis on factors influencing design and art at any specific time during the timeline. Visual communication is explored as a research topic.
Fashion Styling III:
Visual Merchandising
Learners are exposed to techniques of creating visually appealing sets in terms of the specific brief.
Advertisement Styling
Learners are taught the skills to prep products highlight branding and promotional displays for retail and corporate bodies. Important features of brand identity and visual appeal are taught in the form of practical projects and assessments
Runway Fashion Styling
Styling particular to catwalks and designer ranges are dependent on current knowledge of trends, haute couture and prêt-a porter wear. Sequins, co-ordination and conceptual planning are important outcomes of this aspect of fashion.
Trend Forecasting III:
Trend analysis, practical examples, defining a trend board.
