The fashion curricula have been developed by Spero Villioti along with a faculty of practicing professionals and a programme committee of industry leaders. BACHELOR OF FASHION
NQF LEVEL 7 DEGREE
The programme philosophy is to create a learning environment in which innovation, and originality are encouraged and nurtured. There is a strong business grounding within the programme preparing the student to take his / her place in the fast paced global fashion industry. The degree produces versatile fashion specialists who are able to engage in creative problem solving using a depth of knowledge of the field of fashion. In addition a critical understanding of the social, economic and cultural factors which impact on the professional fashion environment are applied within the working context. The programme guides students through a development path which makes provision for an understanding of the industry, which is inclusive of design and operations concepts, at progressive levels of cognitive complexity. Creativity and artistic flair is also incubated within the commercial context, the individual’s learning experience is enhanced within the focused and safe learning environment provided by the institution.
1st Year – Degree
The foundation year introduces the student to the world of fashion and its many intricate facets. Learning how to be successful in the global fashion industry involves understanding a wide variety of core principles; these include; building a body of research; using inspiration in the design process; applying fabric knowledge and related principles in order to strengthen a designer’s message, and most importantly engage with principles of garment engineering and evolve a vision.

2nd Year – Degree
The second Stage of the Degree goes into greater detail and enables the student to apply knowledge and skills engaged with in the first year of study and apply it. Through a combination of studio and formal tutorial guidance, lectures, competitions, project critiques, personal research, independent study and team projects, the student will explore the breadth of courses and develop own individual talents in relation to them. This programme aims to prepare the student to become a professional in the fashion business with an in-depth practical knowledge as its foundation.

3rd Year – Degree
The focus of this final Stage of the Degree is on the further development of the student’s individuality and independence. The course work enables the student to locate and explore fashion as it relates to commercial interests. A solid commercial understanding is imperative for success in the broader fashion industry. The programme is designed to enable the potential within each student to achieve his or her optimal potential and engage actively and progressively within the fashion industry. Areas of the fashion industry are explored in order to develop the individual career path.

Computer aided design is master (CAD), and how to take a design from concept to finished garment is instilled. Students are involved in the planning and hosting of a major fashion event and inspire others by making a difference to their community. They are awarded the opportunity to specialize in a particular field of fashion by producing a selection of garments which define them as a designer. This year acts as an enabler to become not only a designer with their own creative vision, but a professional prepared to take their place in this challenging and ever changing industry.

BEGINNERS GARMENT CONSTRUCTION

Beginners Garment Construction will equip you with the fundamental components of garment construction in both theoretical and practical applications. It is impossible to produce excellent quality garments without in depth quality construction skills and knowledge.
By doing the course you will learn how to:

FLUIDITY AND DRAPING The art of fluidity and draping has been used for centuries to create prestigious, one-of-a-kind garments. Fluidity and draping will show you the concept of constructing advanced garments utilizing specialist techniques for a professional finish. |
CORSETRY AND VOLUME Understand how to attain the perfect balance between volume and corsetry in construction when it comes to glamorous, highly detailed and corseted garments for special occasions. |
TAILORING ‘The perfect fit’ is one of the biggest criteria when picking garments out these days. Tailoring will equip you with the specialized construction techniques to create perfectly fitting everyday separates, including pants, skirts and jackets.

BEGINNERS PATTERN ENGINEERING

Pattern engineering is the greatest tool available to a designer to easily transform their designs from a sketch to reality. The fundamentals of women�s pattern manipulation and pattern engineering will give you the understanding of how to create a tailored, corseted or specialized garment from a concept or illustration into a pattern that will in turn be sewn into a garment. This course introduces the concept of constructing patterns to draft a set of well-fitting blocks that will form the base of all of your designs.
ADVANCED PATTERN ENGINEERING
(11 WEEKS) R4900.00
In this course you will be introduced to the concept of constructing patterns by using and applying the knowledge which you will have gained during the Beginners Pattern Engineering course and the Beginners Garment Construction course, to create advanced garments that are molded to fit and tailored to perfection.
The course will provide you with an understanding of how to create a pattern from a concept or illustration that will intern produce an excellent fitting garment. You will also learn how to grade patterns which is the process of proportionally increasing/decreasing a master pattern to any required size; according to a prescribed set of body measurements.
TOILING You will analyze your patterns and fabric choices to determine the appropriate toiling, cutting and construction approaches by applying principles and methodologies of draping fabrics on professional mannequins to create the three dimensional patterns. The garments are then constructed using industrial and specialist equipment while the fit and styling of the resultant pattern is tested.

GRADING South Africans come in many beautiful shapes and sizes. It is important for first rate South African designers to be able to cater to their clientele. Grading gives the designer the ability proportionally increase or decrease a master pattern to any required size, according to a prescribed set of body measurements. |
