Department of Environmental, Water & Earth Science

Environmental Sciences (N Dip, B Tech)
Environmental Sciences involves the application of basic scientific principles and processes to identify assess and solve technical and operational environmental problems.  As a multi-disciplinary study field, it also involves environmental-impact assessments, life-cycle analyses, environmental auditing, rehabilitation and pollution-prevention technology. The postgraduate studies on masters and doctorate levels on science and management to equip the students with the knowledge and skills to solve environmental problems.
Geology
Geology is part of a historical science that investigates what the planet Earth was like at different times in the past, but more so a specific science that concerns itself with the origin, characterization, exploration, exploitation and responsible management of Earth materials. A geologist can therefore be regarded as an essential role player within the global community who serves it with advice as to the availability, quantity and usefulness of Earth materials.
Water Care
Water Technology is the study of the processes that are used in the treatment and purification of drinking water, wastewater and industrial effluents. This also includes the study of chemistry, physics, hydraulics, microbiology and various management aspects.

Focus of the Research Area
• To demonstrate that novel agricultural uses of wastewater can successfully derived in an environmentally safe manner for a greater societal benefit.
• To study the effect of land use practices on water resource and ways of predicting and mitigating the impacts of these effects
• To better understand the impact the of water resources and drinking water on the health of the rural communities and to develop strategies for the protection of water resources as well as public health in a cost effective way, keeping abreast of international trends and technology.
• To strive towards a bettaffer understanding of the origin, survival and effect of microorganisms associated with drinking water and develop strategies, which allow rapid diagnosis of waterborne infections and their control.
