Continuing Professional Development (EBE)
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme offers short courses, workshops and conferences. These provide a means for the ongoing education of professionals, outside the formal academic courses offered at UCT for degree purposes. Continuing education is considered to include all subjects that will benefit people in their professional and vocational activities.
Centre for Extra-Mural Studies (EMS)
The mission of the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies (EMS) is to contribute to the University’s social responsiveness through the support of student success and by acting to make the academic and knowledge resources of the University accessible to a wider range of participants. The EMS provides a range of courses and learning opportunities for local and overseas university students as well as participants from commerce and industry, government departments, NGOs and the general public.
EMS coordinates several different initiatives including the annual Summer School, short courses for the general public, continuing education courses for working people, Third Term credit-bearing courses for current UCT students and specialised programmes for visiting international student groups.

  • LSE-UCT July School
    The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) are delighted to offer the sixth LSE-UCT July School from 25 June – 06 July 2024. This innovative and prestigious two-week ‘summer school’ style programme provides the highest calibre students, graduates and professionals from across the globe with an exciting opportunity to study important social science issues relevant to Africa today across subject areas as diverse as international relations, economics, management, government, geography, law, media and social policy. Applications are now open.
  • Winter School
    Winter School 2024 is a brand new offering from the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies. Between 5 and 12 August over forty lecturers will present the latest research on genetics, gerontology, archaeology, ornithology and astronomy. Courses cover a wide range of topics from literature and writing to finance, the origins of democracy, the history of Africa’s ivory trade, whiteness, contemporary South African politics, anthropology, evolution and the philosophy of religion. Big names include John Maytham, Antjie Krog and Major-General Jeremy Vearey. Running across two Saturdays and a public holiday, Winter School 2024 incorporates Women’s Day and celebrates it by foregrounding women researchers and writers.   • Summer School
    The annual Summer School runs for two weeks in January each year and is the largest public education programme of its kind in South Africa, regularly attracting around 3 000 people. This public education programme offers courses on a range of topics from arts, humanities and current issues to the physical and environmental sciences and aims to make specialised knowledge accessible to a wide audience, regardless of educational qualifications. These courses are for non-degree purposes and do not involve examinations or certification, though written or practical projects and reading may be required. The programme is available from October each year on the Summer School website.

UCT Law @ Work
Leading the way in continuing legal education since 1999, UCT Law@work presents a range of seminars and courses dealing with various aspects of the law in the fields of labour, commercial and public law, amongst others.
UCT English Language Centre
Based in the Faculty of Humanities, the UCT English Language Centre (ELC) delivers year-round continuing education programmes in English as a Foreign Language to international participants of all ages. A range of courses are offered at various proficiency levels, including General English, English for Business Communication and preparation courses for the IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge English exams. The Centre also runs an English for Academic Purposes programme for local and international applicants to UCT who need to improve their level of English before beginning their degree course.
Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Health
CEU Health is the official Continuing Education Unit for the University of Cape Town’s Faculty of Health Sciences.The unit was established in October 2024 to facilitate short courses offered by the various departments in the Faculty for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of healthcare professionals.
