About the Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology strives to research biological systems and the effect chemical substances can elicit upon them. Through our work we hope to better understand the processes that occur within organisms and contribute to the exciting field of pharmacology.
We present numerous pharmacology lecture blocks for undergraduate medical, dentistry and para-clinical students, as well as two undergraduate modules for science students in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. In postgraduate studies we offer students the theoretical and practical aspects of pharmacology at BSc Hons, MSc and PhD level; and clinically at the MPharmMed level. Currently at the BSc Hons level we offer a curriculum in three tracks: basic, clinical and regulatory pharmacology. Our students are encouraged to present exceptional research at workshops, as well as at national and international conferences. Research is regularly published in peer-reviewed journals.

The Department offers facilities for the testing of various parameters of potential or registered therapeutic compounds. The services we provide can be performed by our qualified personnel, or we can provide the necessary infrastructure to do so.

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Pretoria strives to research the complex interplay between biological systems and the chemical entities that affect them. Through this research, the department contributes to the current understanding  of the processes that occur within organisms and contribute to the exciting field of pharmacology.  The Department of Pharmacology is situated on the Prinshof Campus of the University of Pretoria on the sixth and seventh floor the Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) Building.
Prospective students are encouraged to peruse the academic programmes on offer or contact us for more information.
