Vega School

Vega School

Vega School was formed in 1999 in anticipation of the shift in the global paradigm away from conventional marketing and advertising toward a synchronous cohesion of design, branding and business. With the reconfiguration of traditional platforms and the emergence of new ones, it is the art, craft and science of branding that has become the universal language of the marketplace. Think of brands such as Google, Greenpeace and Apple: brands are far more than letters and logos but powerful cultural forces shaping the world as we know it.
Concomitant with this seismic shift in the industry landscape arose an urgent need to educate South Africa’s most talented young minds in preparation for this brave new world. A new school of thought was called for and Vega answered that call. With branding being the DNA of Vega, the school is ideally positioned to meet the rapidly growing needs of industry by supplying students with the conceptual, strategic and practical skill-sets required to rise to the challenge of the future.
The World Economic Forum in 2024 revealed the findings of its study entitled The Ten Skills You Need to Thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The three skills topping this list are Complex Problem Solving; Critical Thinking and Creativity. These are the cornerstones upon which Vega is built. Vega therefore aims to graduate a new breed of thinker by delivering fully accredited Certificates, Baccalaureates, Honours and Masters programmes in brand leadership; brand management; brand innovation; brand strategy and creative brand communication.
An IIE degree is of the exact same standard as one found in any state university or private university.
At the heart of Vega’s educational vision lies the principle of innovation. Brand and business strategies that merely repeat existing practices add limited value to the marketplace while iconoclasm and innovation unlock true potential. The same truth applies in the teaching and learning environment: without embodying the kind of innovation that propels industry, Vega would not be equipping students with the kind of minds required for them to become the future leaders they are destined to be.
It is a core purpose at Vega to have our students graduate at an industry-ready level. The high levels of academic pursuit are immediately put into practical use as Vega eschews the ‘ivory tower’ approach in favour of hands-on immediate application of theory. Vega students are constantly immersed in live briefs from industry clients so that when they graduate they are already well-versed in the turbulence of ‘the real world’ and slot seamlessly into any industry environment. The stellar careers of many of our highly successful alumni are testament to the success of this methodology. Furthermore, frequent interaction with the top-tier professionals and academics of the Vega Advisory Council help keep curriculae in line with the latest industry innovations.
Vega’s teaching philosophy is built on the mantra of wisdomwithmagic. This reflects the conviction that the essence of branding lies in the fusion of strategy and creativity at the most fundamental level. In other words, a Vega student graduates with a deep understanding that the most effective strategy is inherently creative; the most effective creativity inherently strategic. This is in evidence most compellingly in Vega’s famous Brand Challenge.
Similarly central to Vega’s commitment to innovation in education is the concept of navigation. Vega takes its name from the star in the constellation of Lyra, widely described as the most important star in the sky after the sun. Vega is the navigational star and Vega lecturers are navigators, driven by the ethos of strategic guidance and creative direction as opposed to merely imparting information that is passively absorbed.

BA Honours in Creative Brand Communications (Full Time)

Those white-hot creative ideas are buzzing around your brain non-stop just dying to get out. You see the ads that win all the awards and think “I

Bordeaux, Cape Town and Durban campuses only
The newly evolved BA Honours in Creative Brand Communications will equip you with advanced strategic thinking skills, an academic platform for further studies into a Masters programme and higher order conceptual and creative communication skills. The purpose of the programme is to develop a portfolio of professional creative work (in the domain of Copywriting, Multimedia Design and Visual Communication) illustrative of resilient solutions to complex brand communication challenges and an advanced set of skills in the execution thereof. The ability to apply innovative thinking to multiplex problems is what our industry looks for in those passionate about their craft.
How will your portfolio evolve from Degree level?
Your Honours portfolio will complement your final year degree portfolio by showcasing your ability to solve a complex challenge and produce comprehensive creative brand communication solutions. It will demonstrate that you have advance strategic, problem solving, conceptual and creative brand communication and crafting skills, combined with project management abilities.
What will I cover in the Creative Brand Communication module?
The Creative Brand Communication module consists of a year-long self-proposed ‘real-world’ project based on a complex creative brand communication challenge.  The year-long project is facilitated with interim assessments building towards the final product. Numerous drop-in ‘real-world’ challenges are introduced where students show the ability to solve problems within a short timeframe adding to the portfolio of work.  An extensive reflective process is followed consisting of weekly practical workshops as well as content / theory sessions, including varied ‘ways of thinking’, such as:
• Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Design for Social Change
• Applied Design Thinking (Ideation, Problem Solving, Rapid Collaboration and Prototyping)
• Meaningful Brand Practice, Brand Purpose and Creative Brand Contact Planning
• Innovation in Creative Brand Communication solutions
Students participate in the annual Brand Challenges where they will work in multi-disciplinary teams to solve a live client brief. Students will conclude the year with a Creative Brand Communication portfolio (exhibited at the annual Showcase), panel and live audience presentation of the year-long project and an industry internship.

How will this impact your career?

One does not step directly into a management or leadership position. You need to prove your worth. An Honours graduate should be able to work on more complex and challenging agency accounts or company projects. They should also be able to fast track with greater agility. Importantly, they can pursue further studies to grow in their influence as creative brand communicators.
Who can apply?
Entry requirements include a cognate Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (please enquire for specific criteria) in Creative Brand Communication or Fine and Applied Arts; such as Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Multimedia Design, Copywriting, Information Design, Advertising, Creative Writing, Journalism, Fine Art, Photography, Industrial Design and Architecture.
