1. Position: Curatorial Assistant

Summary
The Curatorial Assistant position requires a candidate who has a keen interest in both the creative and commercial aspects of art galleries. The CA offers support to associates and directors on developing programming within the gallery, working closely with existing gallery artists, identifying new talent, undertaking research on artists through interviews and studio visits, developing archives of texts and images. The successful candidate would also have demonstrable interest in collecting as a form of patronage, and selling art as a mechanism to fund artist’s lives and realize their creative ambitions.
Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with gallery artists in all aspects, developing relationships with new artists, promoting exhibitions and work by artists
  • Providing support for exhibitions from the research and development stage of a project through to its realisation
  • Promoting and selling artists’ work through multiple channels
  • Maintaining and developing the gallery’s network of supporters
  • Notifying patrons of particular works and exhibitions, according to their stated interests
  • Negotiating with gallery managers and curators from other galleries to arrange for loans;
  • Keeping front-of-house staff briefed on technical and artistic matters relating to programming;
  • Keeping up to date with industry developments
  • Generating and working within production budgets for exhibitions and catalogues
  • Working closely with the gallery registrar and shipping companies to prepare relevant loan documentation, administer loan requests and ensure loan conditions are met
  • Dealing with routine enquiries, maintain gallery databases
  • Representing the gallery at various public events


2. Position: Art Preparator

Summary
An Art Preparator performs duties related to exhibition preparation including, but not limited to, installation, de-installation, packing, shipping; co-ordination of staff and materials associated with exhibitions; management of artwork loan and shipping procedures, drawing up of loan agreements, loan time-period tracking, condition reporting, crating and packing; management of exhibition space including floors, walls, lighting; management of gallery storerooms, including physical space assessments and compiling of stock lists for insurance and location purposes.
This position includes a significant amount of hands-on work. Willingness and capacity for this is as important as strong administrative capacity. A driver’s license essential.
Experience with co-ordination of basic art shipping and art packing procedures is an advantage.
Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing and executing all aspects of installations and de-installations including artworks, mounts, cases, electronic equipment, and any other exhibition components
  • Working closely with artists on preparation of space and artworks for exhibition installation and de-installation
  • Management and coordination of services relating to painting of walls, preparation of floors, lighting as required
  • Management of gallery storerooms, including artwork stock lists for insurance and location purposes; regular assessments of storage security and artwork protection levels, management of artwork registers tracking movement of artworks
  • Maintaining a long term planning calendar associated to exhibition schedules both internally and internationally, advising curators and directors timeously of dates and deadlines
  • Arranging and supervising staffing needs for all technical and material aspects of installation and de-installation of exhibitions
  • Working closely with curators and gallery assistant in the design and preparation of exhibitions
  • Management of artwork packing and shipping, ensuring proper handling of artworks
  • Researching and procuring materials relating to packing and shipping, storage
  • Organizing and maintaining gallery tools and supplies to ensure proper installation and aesthetics
  • Co-ordination of collection and delivery schedules of artworks and exhibition components for exhibition or clients, managing use of the gallery vehicle
  • Working closely with art handling, shipping and courier companies as required
  • Responsibility for production of condition reports on all artworks arriving or departing gallery spaces, for exhibition or collectors
  • Management of loan procedures: generating loan forms, condition reports, travel conditions, appropriate packing and crating, shipping documentation
  • Upon request, the co-ordination, and at times assist with the execution, of installation and de-installation of artwork for clients and artist at their residence, office space, studio and art institution facilities
