About the Position

The SAAO is the National Facility for Optical and Infrared Astronomy of the National Research Foundation (NRF). Its headquarters are in Cape Town, while its telescopes are at Sutherland in the Northern Cape. Distributed between the two sites, SAAO employs about 130 people, many of them scientists and engineers, and is contracted to operate SALT (Southern African Large Telescope) on behalf of the international SALT Foundation. SAAO is the premier optical/infrared research facility on the African continent, with global research and outreach collaborations, contributing to SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) human capital development for South Africa. We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of a Hostel Assistant at the Observatory near Sutherland.

The main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • General cleaning of offices and rooms, ie making beds, dusting, vacuuming, etc.
  • Assisting with washing and ironing
  • Assisting with food preparation.
  • Shift work is required and also weekends where necessary

Minimum requirement:

  • Matric
  • 2 years experience in a similar role
  • Bilingual (Afrikaans and English)
  • Great customer services skills

  • Good intrapersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Be prepared to work over weekends,
  • Must be a good team player

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Servicing of company vehicles to predefined checklists
  • Attend to breakdowns and carry out the necessary repairs on fleet vehicles & earth moving equipment
  • Apply Health & Safety rules and regulations in all aspects of job
  • Ensure vehicles are kept in line with legal requirements and company policies i.e. roadworthy etc.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working place at all times
  • Administer regular reporting to management regarding breakdowns, services etc.
  • Perform ancillary duties to the above as determined by management on an ongoing basis
  • Develop and maintain good relationship with key supplier/business partners

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  The ideal candidate will have the following competencies: Ability to:

  • sweep, scrub, wax and polish floors using general cleaning equipment
  • arrange decorations and furniture for social functions
  • clean areas surrounding buildings, such as paths and entrances
  • clean rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms and other work areas
  • dust furniture and equipment
  • remove stains from fabric or carpets
  • transport trash and waste to disposal areas
  • wash windows, door panels and sills
  • work without constant supervision

Experience in:

  • General Housekeeping/Cleaning Services
  • Use of Industrial Cleaning Materials

Knowledge of:

  • customer service
  • good customer service
  • hygiene regulations
