About the Position
SARAO has an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager to join our team based in Cape Town. The successful incumbent will be expected to apply their professional management skills to the coordination and delivery of initiatives, activities and solutions within the Science and Research group, and its respective functions.
- NQF 7 (BTech/BSc) or higher in Business Management, Engineering Management, Science Management or related field
- Project Management Certificate e.g. PMP, PRINCE II, SAFe
Minimum work experience required:
- At least 5 years’ experience in managing an Engineering or IT development team
- Of which the 5 years’ experience must include the following:
- Project management in a research, computing or engineering environment
- Internal and external stakeholder management
- PFMA-governed procurement, including development and management of delivery through tender systems
Duties include (but not limited to):
- Enhance the various team’s capacity in adopting and executing various organisational processes
- Take responsibility for risk-awareness, methodological execution of activities and tasks within the Science and Research group
- Interact and coordinate activities and deliverables with other SARAO teams
- Take responsibility of the development of a structured document management approach within the Science and Research teams
- Take responsibility for the verification and acceptance of various deliverables to the organisation and stakeholders
- Compile and oversee the administration and organisation supporting processes which include Health and Safety, Human Resources, ISO 9001, Finance and Procurement
Ability to:
- work independently and as part of a team
- communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
Experience in:
- Agile project management approaches (e.g. KANBAN, SCRUM, SAFe)
- business analysis and system engineering
- participating in globally distributed projects
- mentoring young and junior team members
Knowledge of:
- and exposure to architecture, design or development of large software projects
- various cloud-based coordination tools such as JIRA, Innoslate, Trello, Confluence

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South Africa’s activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction. SARAO is a National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT and KAT-7 telescopes in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.
