CT Media Publications (Pty) Ltd, (subsidiary of Media24) T/A Soccer Laduma, the biggest weekly soccer newspaper and website in South Africa, requires a qualified and forward-thinking sub-editor in their Cape Town office.
Purpose: High-quality subbing of news articles for the local sections of the Soccer Laduma website. Eliminate grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, poor phrasing and adjust content according to Soccer Laduma’s style. Article quality, strength and angle selection should be considered, while regular feedback to journalists to help them improve as writers.
Main reel management needs are required according to the content plan. Watching article performance and managing time spent on the homepage must be done throughout the day.
Social promotion of articles needs to be well thought out and in accordance with our social media strategy. Posts need to be of high-quality and geared towards attracting readers to the website.
Key responsibilities:

  • Sub-edit all local, players abroad and campaign articles for Soccer Laduma website
  • Correct all spelling and grammatical errors
  • Ensure high-quality of each article posted
  • Look for the strongest possible angles
  • Feedback to journalists regarding quality of articles and/or changes required (monthly journo reviews)
  • Work closely with the content editor to handle breaking news
  • Feedback weekend planning and content saved by 2pm every Friday afternoon
  • Ensure articles are posted timeously, within the timeframes of the Soccer Laduma content plan
  • Change the featured and popular reels to update with new articles
  • Handover to after hours team as well as include content editor and website editor
  • Monitor content performance to ensure that article reads are maximised
  • Select stories for posting on Twitter/Facebook/Google+
  • Crafting clever blurbs to entice click-throughs from social channels
  • Analyse the social post (Facebook, G+) to ensure that all elements meet a high standard
  • Highest performing content needs to be reposted on social at a later time to increase reads
  • Use Twitter with more regular reposts of strong content
  • Monitor social referrals through posts to track success

Knowledge and experience:

  • Must have completed a degree or diploma in English, journalism or media studies
  • At least two years’ experience as a sub-editor
  • Football-related experience advantageous
  • Strong computer skills
  • Passion for South African football and a knowledge of local clubs, leagues and players
  • Understanding of media law and how to handle sensitive stories
