Description:

A vacancy currently exists for a Section Ranger at Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park. Being key position, the successful candidate would have to be a highly motivated individual with the necessary skills and experience to take immediate responsibility for ongoing environmental management of the Section.  The successful candidate will report to the Senior Section Ranger.

Requirements:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities that are required for the job:

  • National Diploma in Conservation or equivalent qualification or degree
  • Three years practical experience in nature conservation operations.
  • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Express
  • Code 08 driver’s license.
  • Firearm competency.
  • Skipper’s license (up to 40 nautical miles).
  • Environmental Management Inspector (EMI) and Fisheries Control Officer (FCO) appointment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, as well as conflict resolution, project management and liaison skills.
  • Working knowledge of environmental legislation, i.e. Protected Areas Act, NEMA, MLRA, NVFFA, National Forest Act; etc.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours.
  • Criminal record and clearance checks will be conducted on shortlisted candidates.
  • Candidate will be required to reside in the Park and accommodation will be made available.

Responsibilities:

  • Natural resources management that includes the implementation of invasive plant, alien animal, unnatural soil erosion and rehabilitation management programs.
  • Management of the 34 000ha no-take zone of the Tsitsikamma MPA by means of foot, vehicle, boat and motorcycle patrols and observation posts.
  • Monitoring of developments and projects in the National Park as well as areas adjacent impacting on the Park.
  • Monitoring and recording of resource management data and facilitation of external research.
  • Human resources management and administration.
  • Supervision of interns, volunteers and contractors who provide conservation management services to the Section.
  • Identification and implementation of personnel development and skills training.
  • Visitor Management – including safety and security of visitors, control of visitors’ behaviour and recording, interpretation and dissemination of information.
  • Responsible for the safety and security of the Storms River Mouth main camp and staff village.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and management of all vessels which includes the upkeep of the launch site in the section and ensure compliance of vessels in accordance with maritime safety standards.
  • Monitor compliance in the section in respect of concessionaires operating within the boundaries of the Tsitsikamma Section.
  • Infrastructure Maintenance includes buildings, boardwalks, outposts, as well as track management and signage.
  • Development of sound and mutually beneficial relationships with Stakeholders, neighbouring communities, NGO’s, and other associated organizations and individuals.
  • Financial administration, including budget control and monitoring expenditures
  • Assist in the management of cultural historic nodes in the section.
  • Implementation and administration of approved conservation legislation, policy according to agreed management and operational plans.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary, based on the salary scale of a position with a Paterson C4 job grade and allowances and benefits as specified in the HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Services of SANParks.
