Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon 2024
The Two Oceans Marathon, which is sponsored by Old Mutual, is considered one of the world’s most beautiful marathons, attracts over 20 000 participants annually. Eager athletes flock to Cape Town to embark on a 56 kilometer ultramarthon or a 21 km half marathon run over road and mountain climbs while being enthralled by the mesmering views over the ocean. A motivating and equally attractive feature of the route is, as the name implies, that it takes runners past both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The next installment of this ever-popular event takes place on the 15 April 2024.
Runners participating in the event begin their race in Newlands and hit the road towards Noordhoek. It’s then that the most spectacular portion of the marathon begins – Chapman’s Peak.
The toughest and most challenging part of the Two Oceans Marathon is the mountain climb known as the ‘Suikerbossie Pass’ – a section of the route dreaded by many participating athletes. Once you’ve relished the scenery from Chapman’s Peak Drive and you’ve navigated the mostly-flat roads of Hout Bay, every iota of lingering energy will need to be mustered as you climb this gargantuan hill. The enthusiastic waves of supporters will edge you on to the top of this hill where the Atlantic Ocean will finally come into full view.
Every kilometre of the 56 kilometre route will be marked off, right from the start on Newlands Main Road, to the finish at the UCT sports field. The half marathon, which covers 21 kilometres, follows the first few kilometres of the ultra route, but breaks away before you can start heading around the peninsula.
This annual event is enjoyed by many – both the young and old, professional athletes and amateur runners– and turns the Mother City into a thriving hub of spirit and festivity.
