Chief Research Technologist

Health Systems Research Unit
Durban Based

One Year Contract
The Health Systems Research Unit requires the services of a Scientist with a social sciences or health psychology background to manage staff and project activities in KwaZulu-Natal on a HIV-related study among children and adolescents.
Key Responsibility Areas:

  • Assist with the implementation of the research protocol
  • Liaise with key provincial and district stakeholders
  • Manage a small team of field staff and a data capturer
  • Co-ordinate project activities
  • Conduct qualitative interviews
  • Write scientific reports and papers for publication
  • Present research results at local and national conferences and meetings

Core Requirements:

  • Honours degree or equivalent 4 year qualification in social sciences or health psychology
  • Experience in project managing research studies (i.e. staff management, procurement, logistics, financial management)
  • A minimum of 2-years’ experience in conducting qualitative research (i.e. interviews as well as managing and analysing data)
  • Computer literate in MS packages and electronic literature searching.
  • Possess a code 8 South African driver’s license
  • Fluent in isiZulu and English

Key competencies and skills required:

  • Knowledge of HIV OR child and adolescent health in South Africa
  • Experience in scientific writing
  • Strong qualitative interviewing skills
  • Qualitative data management and analytical skills
  • Experience in management of field or data staff
  • Experience in developing SOPs and training material as well as training of field staff
  • Systematic thinking and planning
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to organise own time around activities to meet project deadlines
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good people management skills
  • Skills in mentoring junior staff

A salary in the region of R 387 000 per annum, cost-to-company will be negotiated based on qualifications and relevant experience.
Note: All short-listed candidates will be requested to undergo an interview which will include a brief exercise aimed at evaluating the candidates’ skills in qualitative interviewing.
