Room Gallery & Project Open Call for Residence
ROOM’s Artist in Residency Programme is open to practitioners from diverse creative and non/creative fields, which want to engage artistically with their field and/or want to collaborate with Johannesburg based artists in the development, execution and presentation of their ideas. Apply now for a residency period September 2024 – March 2024.
ROOM was established in 2011 as a Gallery and Project Based space with monthly artistic programming. To date we have hosted over 50 primarily Johannesburg based artists/performers/filmmakers/play – writers etc, who have sought a platform for 1st time solo exhibitions and collaborative projects. It is with this impetus that we have grown our programming and now also focus on providing an artist in residency programme that can provide working, discursive and presentational platforms/context for invited and/or selected (through a public application process) artists.
Since its inception artistic collaboration and exchange within the region, the continent, its Diaspora and the South-South Axis has been a curatorial focus of ROOM as an organisation. From September 2024 ROOM has taken occupancy in a new and bigger space, which allows for various such exchanges to take place simultaneously. We now have 3 exhibition/project-based Halls in which to present creative projects we engage with. We anticipate dedicating 2 to 4 slots per year to exchange driven projects between ROOM and artists from South Africa, the content and its Diasporas, as well as artists from the global North..
