The role of the academic manager is to manage the performance of all teaching staff as it relates to online teaching and learning. This includes the effective curriculum delivery of courses or programmes, the effective delivery of learning outcomes, the achievement of departmental goals, and the meeting of defined key performance indicators.
The position is responsible for creating and maintaining an academically supportive environment,
where accountability is a priority, for the teaching staff of GetSmarter. They work closely with the ASM to achieve the company’s purpose of improving lives through better education.
The incumbent has a genuine appreciation for and understanding of: teaching within the Higher Education sector, online teaching and learning strategies, people and performance management, and is able to accept and assume responsibility for the performance of others.

Key responsibilities

  • Liaising with talent management with regard to HT recruitment and employment contracts.
  • Managing the budget for the courses that fall under his/her portfolio of courses.
  • Conducting quality assurance of all HTs and ensuring that they are implementing our best practices during course presentation.
  • Working closely with learning design to ensure effectively curriculum delivery.
  • Training and upskilling the HTs with regards to our defined best practice for online teaching.
  • Delivering on-boarding training for new head tutors. This will include the development and maintenance of this material.
  • Collaborating with head tutors to drive better education as a principle and framework for online teaching.
  • Defining KPIs for evaluating HT performance as it relates to teaching and learning.
  • Monitoring and evaluating HT performance against defined KPIs.
  • Using data effectively to manage HT performance and to improve teaching and learning across our courses.
  • Assisting in defining best practice for online teaching and learning at GetSmarter.
  • Integrating with the research hub to conduct ongoing research (with two x publications per year) into online teaching and learning, with a focus on GetSmarter’s practices.
  • Preparing and communicating reports on KPIs to the head tutors, tutors, makers and support staff.
  • Managing, in conjunction with the academic staff manager, the head tutor issues tracker.
  • Supporting the academic staff manager with any presentation phase related head tutor concerns.
  • Identifying, communicating and rewarding exceptional teaching.
  • Managing the head tutors with regard to annual evaluations.
  • Maintaining positive relationships between externally based academic staff and internally based GetSmarter Staff.
  • Holding head tutors accountable for improving their overall performance during the presentation of their course/s.

 
Requirements

  • A Postgraduate level qualification in education, or similar.
  • At least two years’ experience as an online teaching / facilitator or two years experience in evaluating and managing the performance of educators.
  • A keen passion for online teaching and learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, including competence in using word processing and internet browsing applications, as well as email management.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong lateral thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • A high level of confidence, professionalism and interpersonal skills.
  • Good work ethic and time management skills.
  • Competency in information retrieval, analysis and collation (essential research skills).
  • Data literacy essential.
