UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music – Jazz Recitals 2024

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to present the Jazz recitals on Wednesday 15 November 2024 at 18:00 at Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.
The Candidates for this year’s recitals are Phumlani Mtiti (saxophone), Zwelihle Kunene (piano) as well as Zibusiso Makhathini (piano).
Phumlani Mtiti is a saxophonist originally from the Eastern Cape. He started playing saxophone in his late teens and has never looked back. He has been involved in projects which have made appearances on our local jazz clubs and festivals around the country. He is a novice music educator teaching part-time at high school level. Should all go well with this recital, Phumlani intends to study further and investigate if there is a place for South Africa’s contemporary music ideas in the global scene.
Zwelihle Kunene is a pianist and an aspiring musician. Mostly interested in the Production aspect of the Entertainment Industry. Started playing piano taking from his uncle around the age of 7 years old. He’s strongly appreciates the support he has been receiving since he started playing.
Makhathini is a pianist, composer and producer born and bred in Estcourt, Kwa-Zulu Natal. His love for music became evident at the tender age of seven. Fond memories have been documented in childhood photos where he is fiddling with musical instruments and probing the existence of pitch, melody and harmony. Coming from a family of self-taught musicians inspired him to pursue music and after matriculating there was only one career wish for the young Zibusiso- studying music. He enrolled to study jazz and popular music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Apart from being a performer, Makhathini is an activist in the South African music scene. He has committed his life to the improvement and well-being of South African arts and orally engages with the youth of South Africa on socio-economic issues, to change the stereotype of music being seen as just a hobby.
Expect to hear songs like “My Little Willie Weeps by Charlie parker,  Mamelodi-Bheki Mseleku, E.S.P – Wayne Shorter, Fee fi fo fum – Wayne Shorter and Central Park West – John Coltrane.
