Merit Award (Academic)
VUT provides financial assistance to students demonstrating academic excellence.
First-year students
First-year students can qualify for the merit award based on their final Grade 12 results. The student must hand a copy of the final matric results to the Financial Aid Office.
Criteria for merit award

Calculation of merit award points is the total of the points allocated per subject, divided by the number of subjects enrolled.
Senior Students
A list of senior students who qualify for a merit award is retrieved from the university IT system. Deserving students will be allocated the award based on their results during the preceding year of study. The funds are credited directly to the student’s study fees by 30 April of the academic year.
Criteria for Merit Award
- No application required. Students can submit their academic record if the funds are not automatically allocated.
- The student must be registered for a minimum of three courses.
- The student must attain an overall weighted average of 75%+ in the preceding results.
NB: Exempted courses are not included in the minimum relative course weight for Merit Award purposes. An amount of R5 000 will be credited to the study fees account of the student. These awards are only for Undergraduate studies and students proceeding to BTech.
