ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR – VISUAL ARTS / DESIGN AT VUT

While the post is substantive, the incumbent will be required to assume the role of Research Professor in the Department for a period of five (5) years.

Associate Professor – Visual Arts / Design at VUT
The incumbent will be required to: {KPA’S}

  • Manage the provision of quality teaching, research and community/industrial engagement
  • Manage and monitor student learning activities to ensure successful completion of qualifications as far as possible
  • Attend Senate and related academic committee meetings and coordinate research activities in the department
  • Develop research capacity in the department within the vision of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and facilitate its implementation
  • Provide academic leadership in teaching and learning as well as research programmes in a Visual Arts and Design domain
  • Liaise with industry, professional bodies and education institutions nationally and internationally
  • Develop and promote post-graduate study and supervise post-graduate students
  • Manage administrative tasks including student registration on Masters / PhD levels
  • Provide leadership in the development of new curricular and programmes
  • Developing and implementing new methods of teaching to reflect changes in Visual Arts and Design Research Staff and team development
  • Undertaking personal research projects and actively contribute to the institutions research profile
  • Carrying out administrative tasks related to the department and involvement in committees and boards
  • Establishing collaborative links outside the University with academic, industrial, commercial and public organisations

Qualification/Experience:

  • An appropriate PhD or D Tech in domains related to Fashion Design, Fine Art, Graphic Design and or Photography
  • A minimum of six (6) years teaching experience in higher education in South Africa
  • Competency to present various strands of critical and analytical theory in the Visual Arts and Design domain, both as systems of analysis and as stimuli for creative practice
  • Four (4) publications in an accredited journal (as first author) at Senior Lecturer level in an accredited journal
  • Three (3) completed Masters (as co-supervisor) at Senior Lecturer level; and / or two (2) completed Doctorates (as main promoter) at Senior Lecturer level
  • Four (4) national presentations / papers at Senior Lecturer level; and two (2) international presentations / papers at Senior Lecturer level (international conferences in South Africa will also be regarded as international conferences)
  • Proven involvement on departmental and faculty level committees (e.g. faculty management committee, research committee, quality committee, teaching and learning committee, etc.)
  • Active involvement on faculty and university level committees (e.g. institutional quality assurance committee, senate, etc.)
  • Evidence of leadership in community organisations and participation in activities in the wider community related specifically to the academic discipline and/or involvement in significant community activities in professional, cultural, religious, sporting and development fields
  • Participating in community service projection considering the specific discipline. Obtaining funding for community service projects; and integrated community service and service learning in a structured and formal way into curriculum.
  • Experience in curriculum development and material design
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies
  • Membership of editorial boards and peer reviewing experience would be an added advantage
