CALL FOR WORK: ANOMALIES
Semaphore is interested in how you as a photographer understand the theme ‘Anomalies’. The various definitions above are for reference only and should not be understood as directives. Artists are asked to submit a text along with their work to explain how they understand their work to fit in with the theme.
The deadline for submission is midnight (GMT+1) on Sunday 26 February 2024.
Artists/photographers will be notified of whether they will participate in the exhibition by Monday 20 March at the latest.
When will the exhibition take place?
The exhibition will take place from 20 April to 22 May 2024.
What kind of an exhibition is it?
The group show with the title ‘Anomalies’ will be an exhibition of digital photographic prints.
Note that there is no fee for submitting work to this call.
How will the exhibition work?
All the photographs that are submitted to this call for work must be part of an edition of no more than 50 prints and must be available for sale.
Note that the size of the edition will determine the sales price of the print, to be fixed by the gallery. For example, a print from an edition of 10 will have a higher sales price than a print from an edition of 40.
The rest of the information in this section will only apply to work that has been accepted for the exhibition. However, please read this carefully before submitting your work because the exhibition type is particular.
Artists and photographers whose work has been accepted for the show will be asked to upload the highest resolution image file they have of their digital photograph to a secure folder. The gallery will print the image from this file on photographic paper and will assume any framing and hanging costs for the exhibition. The artist does not have to contribute financially to the exhibition.
The gallery expects exact information about the place of the print in the artist’s or photographer’s numbered edition. For example, if you have sold 10 prints out of 20 prints and assuming that the remaining 10 prints have not actually been printed out, the gallery will print number 11 out of the print edition of 20 for the exhibition.
Unfortunately, artists and photographers can’t submit files for editions that have been entirely printed out. For example, if you have sold or printed out all 20 prints of your full edition of 20, you can’t submit an image of that work.
Artists and photographers will be sent a certificate of authentication to sign regarding their prints. Return postage will also be at the gallery’s expense.
Artists and photographers can send specifications for printing that the gallery will follow as closely as possible.
No photographs will be printed on paper larger than A2 format (42 cm x 59.4 cm). Any size smaller than A2 is welcome.
The gallery will sell the print during the exhibition and for a period of twelve months after the end of the exhibition. Any prints that have not been sold by the end of this period will be destroyed, allowing artists and photographers to make a print at that number in the edition available for sale once again.
The gallery and the artist/photographer will share the sales price equally (fifty-fifty) after any taxes required by Swiss law have been deducted.

You have to be an artist who is a citizen of one of the countries of the African continent or an artist whose main country of residence has been one of the countries of the African continent for more than three years.
We are looking for artists who already have a substantial body of work to show. We discourage applicants from sending in photographs that are not part of a series.
How do I submit my work?
To apply for this exhibition, you have to submit a maximum of five low-resolution images of photographs that qualify for this exhibition based on the description above, a copy of your CV/resume and a statement about how you understand your work to fit in with the theme ‘Anomalies’.

- named with your last name, the title of the image and the smallest dimension in pixels of the highest resolution digital photo file available for the image (which is not the smallest dimension of the image you will upload for application). For example, if your last name is Diop, the title of your photo is ‘Strange’ and the digital photo you would like to submit a low-resolution image of is 4,000 x 6,000 pixels in dimension, your submission image will be entitled Diop_Strange_4000pixels.jpg (although the low-resolution version of the image you will submit may only be 1,000 x 1,500 pixels in dimension).
What are the text requirements?
Upload your CV or resume in .txt, .pdf, .doc or .docx formats. Your CV or resume has to be relevant to your career as an artist. Files should be no larger than 1MB
Upload a statement about your work and how you understand it to fit in with the theme ‘Anomalies’. The file should be no larger than 1MB.
