CUT welcomes the national call for funding of financially deserving students
“The enrolment of students at universities is under a microscope following the announcement of free education. The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) welcomes the endeavour by government to better support financially deserving and academically talented students and commends government for this noble effort. Despite a huge influx of prospective students on CUT campuses, the university remains calm. About 11 000 first-year applications for admission were received by the closing date of applications and late applications in 2024. The walk-in administration period, scheduled from 8 January to 12 January 2024, is currently underway in an effective, efficient and well-ordered manner. Regular engagements are taking place between Student Leaders and Management, and Registrations will start from 15 January to 24 January 2024”, said Prof. Henk de Jager, Vice-Chancellor and Principal at CUT.
This time of the year, a large number of pedestrians and vehicles are moving around Welkom and Bloemfontein Campuses. A contingency plan and standard procedures are in place to assess and mitigate potential risks to safety of students, parents and other users of the university facilities during the walk-ins.
We will continue to assess the situation and risks that may arise and formulate appropriate response strategies in collaboration with a number of role players including our student leaders, staff as well as external partners.
While more than 3000 students have been admitted so far, the available space at both Welkom and Bloemfontein Campuses will accommodate at least four thousand first-years for admission in this academic year. The availability of space is based on the university’s enrolment plan, which facilitates funding the university receives from the Department of Higher Education and Training.
CUT encourages learners from schools to apply on time, as it eliminates the stress and wait that is unavoidable during walk-in applications on campuses. Another factor is the fact that it places these prospective students at a disadvantage; limiting prospects of pursuing their fields of interest.
