About De Beers
De Beers Group was found in 1888 and headquartered in Luxembourg. The company is a big player in exploration, mining, retail, trading and manufacturing diamonds products. It served worldwide and operates in 28 countries but the main mining sites are in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Canada. Mining in Botswana and Namibia is joint ventures with the government of the republic, while mining in South Africa is 26% owned by Black Economic Empowerment partner, Ponahalo Investments. De Beers company currently hold the 35% of worldwide rough diamond production through DTC, the subsidiary distributor.
Available Fields of Study
De Beers bursaries’ main purpose is to attract young South African students who is interested to learn and build careers in the following fields of study:
- Mining Engineering
- Metallurgy (Extractive only)
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy current only)
- Chemical Engineering
- Geology
- Commerce – Accounting major only (only affirmative action applicants)
The Requirements For Bursaries
To apply for De Beers bursaries, all applicants are expected to fulfill the qualifications written below:
- De Beers bursaries will be awarded to South African citizen with valid ID
- Grade 12 applicants are prioritized
- Applicants must have minimum C symbol in Mathematics and Science and pass in Mathematics, Science and English with minimum of 60%
- Applicants are willing to take one of major fields of study mentioned above
De Beers bursaries cover registration and tuition fees, prescribed books, accommodation and meals fees, personal allowance and computer allowance. Please note that the bursaries availability depend on the company’s manpower condition and De Beers bursaries can not guarantee the applicants who already studying in university. It recommends applicants to apply to at least two universities and reapply for the next year for De Beers bursaries.
Applying For Bursaries
De Beers bursaries closing date for Bridging Programme Bursray is on July 31st and Vocational Bursary is on June 15th. Please attach the completed application form with the certified copy of full academic records to date. The De Beers bursaries application form can be downloaded here:
