The Durban University of Technology School of Education under the Faculty of Arts and Design, recently held its annual awards day at the Indumiso Campus. Top performing students for the previous year (2024) were rewarded for their hard work and dedication. Some of the awards given were in recognition of top performing students who did well in their continuous assessment for subjects such as Natural Sciences, Technology, Economics and Management.
Two special awards were also given on the day for outstanding and best overall performances. In her welcome address, Dr Dudu Mzindle, the School of Education’s Head of Department said they were proud and honoured to have students who put so much effort in their work. “This function has been put together to recognise the efforts of all students in our school of education. We take pride in preparing educators to serve our community,” she said.
Further elaborating on Dr Mzindle’s welcome note, Sam Nkosi a principal at Grace College, congratulated the students and encouraged them to keep investing in their profession as educators. “When you are an educator and in life, consistency is very important. You have been recognised for working consistently. As teachers you are examples to society, the way you conduct yourselves, the way you prepare your lessons and the way you do things in general is observed by everyone around you, so it is important to be on your best all the time,” she added.
Concluding the event was Professor Brian Pearce, the Faculty of Arts and Design’s Deputy Dean, who thanked the staff and students for their work and making the day possible for everyone. Prof Pearce encouraged students to continue excelling. “Being a teacher is one of the greatest things one can be, so I encourage you to have a sense of pride about the profession you have chosen,” said Prof Pearce.
