A two day Eskom scientific expo for young aspiring scientists ended on Saturday, 19 August 2024 with an award ceremony held at the Durban University of Technology’s Fred Crookes Sport Centre.
The science expo award ceremony was attended by primary and high school pupils from various schools around KwaZulu-Natal, as well as their educators and parents. The award ceremony takes place every year after an exhibition of science projects.
Addressing the attendees at the science expo award ceremony, DUT’s Co-operative Education Director, Shakeel Ori extended his gratitude to the schools and the companies sponsoring the expo for recognising DUT as a the University suitable to host this two day event. In his address, he (Ori) encouraged learners to pursue their studies at DUT so that they can explore the various science, technology, engineering, biotechnology, maths and innovation (STEMI), while also developing problem solving skills.
“We are glad to host this event, we are glad we could host you here at the Durban University of Technology. As a University of Technology, it is learners like yourself that come to us and look at things you have to put together, any institution would be lucky to have you,” said Ori.
Learners who had projects that stood out were awarded with gold, bronze and silver medals. Pupils who did exceptionally well at the expo will also represent the province at the national expo taking place from 3 to 6 October 2024, in Johannesburg, at the South African International Science Fair which is to be held at the Birchwood Hotel.
Concluding the two day expo, Eskom Human Resource representative, Charles Ndlovu thanked everyone who had been instrumental in making the expo a success. “Coming to the end of our expo in Durban, we must extend our deepest gratitude to our education partner, DUT for playing a pivotal role in making this expo happen. As Eskom, we are humbled and proud to be associated with an event of this magnitude. We must also congratulate all the pupils, their schools and teachers for making it this far. Each one of you has done exceptionally well,” he said.
