Saw Mill Manager – Weatherboard KZN
Position Purpose
The General Manager, Sawmilling is responsible for the overall operation of the entire sawmill as well as pallet manufacturing operations. In carrying out this role, the General Manager, Sawmilling will ensure maximum efficiency and profitability is maintained in a safe environment. This position is also accountable to ensure compliance with all the statutory and environmental regulations governing sawmilling operations.
Responsibilities include:

  • To lead the production and supply of approximately 70% of CHEP SA’s ongoing pallet and repair timber requirements,to correct quality specs and on time delivery deadlines.
  • To continuously seek to improve cutting yields and efficient utilisation of labour and plant resources that will result in improved/efficient production flows and ultimately, product cost as well as quality improvements.
  • To work in tandem with the CHEP Sales and Marketing Development team to develop and acquire new corporate non-pooling pallet markets as well as one-way trip whitewood pallet markets.
  • To oversee the proposed R15mil sawmill capex expansion program that increase sawmill production capacity/output by approximately 20%.

To ensure deployment of appropriate Brambles-compliant Health and Safety as well as Zero Harm principles through training, safety-compliant production controls and procedures, and operational site security measures.

  • Sawmill Metrics:
  • Sawn timber recovery in excess of 52%
  • Logs cut – 400m3 /day
  • Log stock holding
  • Sawn timber stock holding
  • Consignment pallets for CHEP

Scope
Annual Revenue Budget: R 200mil

  • Product groups: Pallets / Repair Materials, FMCG and Agric Markets

Qualifications

  • Matric Essential
  • Preferred Tertiary Qualification in Engineering / Production


Experience 

  • Extensive Sawmill experience
  • Good working knowledge of kiln Drying processes
  • Good working knowledge of saw doctoring
  • Significant Production Management experience (eg. Pallet manufacturing)
  • SAP knowledge an advantage
  • 8 – 10 years general management experience (forestry / production / engineering / logistics industry) – preferably in some type of sawmill supervision
