Helping Pupils Make Informed Career Choices

The University of Zululand exposed various career paths to high school learners who attended its Open Day 2024 yesterday (Wednesday, 16 May 2024) at the King Bhekuzulu Hall which was filled to capacity.
UNIZULU offers a wide range of career-oriented degree programmes in its four faculties; namely Science and Agriculture; Arts; Education as well as Commerce, Administration and Law. The event was thus created to assist learners in making informed decisions about their future careers and to give them a chance to experience the University first hand.
The event attracted 38 schools; mostly from the Zululand, King Cetshwayo and Umkhanyakude districts which translated to an excess of 3000 pupils. Exhibitors included 42 academic departments from the university as well as six external exhibitors such as the Central Applications Office, ABSA, SAPS, Water and Sanitation as well as the National Financial Aid Scheme.
Not even the cold and wet weather could damper the mood at the event as the UNIZULU community welcomed the schools.
“Overall the open day was well received by our learners,” said Nompilo Dlamini, the champion of the project and UNIZULU Schools Liaisons Officer. “Every course in all faculties that the university offers was exhibited diligently.”
A pupil who attended the event said that she found the day fascinating and interesting, adding that she is motivated to apply for higher education in 2024 early. “I will make it into the BCom (Accounting) programme and that can only be done by making sure that I pull up my socks and work hard at school. It won’t be easy but I am prepared to do the work. I did not know the various opportunities that I can choose from in the BCom (Accounting) field,” said the pupil.
