Inequality and Emancipation in South African Visual Culture Education - call for papers
The Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre (VIAD, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Johannesburg), in partnership with Scholarships of Teaching in Art and Design (STAND, University of Johannesburg) invites abstracts for contributions to the E-book titled Inequality and Emancipation in South African Visual Culture Education (Jacana Press, 2024) edited by Brenden Gray.
Contributions are envisioned as broadly and critically addressing the lack of local literature dealing with relationships between inequalities and visual culture education in South African today. In doing so they potentially prise open a critical space to respond to the current crisis in South African Higher Education. All chapters will be double-blind peer reviewed and eligible for DoHET subsidy.
In this edited volume, authors engage with existing links between education and inequality, and pose pedagogical alternatives and emancipatory possibilities in the visual culture field with a focus on South African Higher Education. How are practitioners, researchers and educators, working in the field of visual culture in South African Higher Education, currently dealing with issues of inequality? Do contemporary incarnations of visual culture education sustain, naturalise and reproduce inequality? How might local teaching practices challenge, uphold or privilege elitism, exclusivity and cultural domination embedded in unequal social relations?
Scholars in the visual arts, architecture, design, art history, interdisciplinary studies as well as those looking at visual culture education through specific disciplinary lenses (such as sociology, education and economics) are invited to present positions and case studies.
Invited contributions may engage with, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Definitions of inequalities in a South African context and implications thereof for struggles in Higher Education.
  • Transformation, institutional culture and the reproduction of social power in South African Higher Education as related to the teaching of visual culture.
  • Disciplinary and interdisciplinary orientations to social justice.
  • Decolonisation of knowledge, institutions and curricula in relation to visual culture education.
  • Politics and ethics in visual culture education.
  • Visual culture education, social movements and activism.
  • Pedagogies responding critically to neoliberalism, globalisation and emerging forms of power.

Submission of abstracts:
Abstracts of between 300 and 400 words will be considered.
