Based in Mowbray, Cape Town, the TCAE wishes to fill the following vacancies:

The intention of the fellowship programme is to offer a full-time, one-to-two year opportunity to leading activists to enable them to use the space offered by the Centre for theoretical study, reflection and discussion, for engagement with a range of activist networks, for gaining additional experience in activist education, and for furthering the aims of the Centre. The expectation is that Junior Fellows will enable the Centre to link their work with established networks of young activists whose vision and energy are a source of ongoing inspiration and revitalisation. Junior Fellows are expected to become centrally involved in the work of the Centre and responsibilities will include assistance with curriculum and materials development, teaching and co-ordination of activities and events.
Requirements:

  • A university degree or the equivalent. A postgraduate qualification would be a strong recommendation
  • Experience of working in an activist organisation working for social justice, and part of an activist network which aligns with the overall aims of the Centre.
  • Excellent communication and research skills
  • A strong interest in political education
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • Curious, imaginative and hardworking
  • Shortlisting and interviewing will only take place in January 2024.

Co-ordinator for Creativity and Arts in Activism
Based in Mowbray, Cape Town, the TCAE wishes to fill the following vacancies:
Co-ordinator for Creativity and Arts in Activism
Reporting to the Director, the key responsibilities of this exciting position include:

  • Researching current creative and innovative approaches already being used in social justice organisations and movements
  • Facilitating training/workshops that will help activists to explore their creativity, expanding their ability to think innovatively and differently around the problems they face in their struggles
  • Contributing creatively to the pedagogical practices of the Centre, assisting us to create an effective and more vibrant learning and teaching environment
  • Liaising with artists practicing art that is politically engaged
  • Researching and exploring the historical intersection of artistic practice and communities with progressive social movements and organisations

Requirements:

  • A university degree or equivalent
  • Experience in an activist organisation working for social justice and/or experience in an arts organisation with similar goals and/or be a practicing arts activist
  • An understanding of aesthetics and politics in the context of critical theory and the arts
  • Knowledge of South African art, theatre and music history and current art production
  • Knowledge of international arts activism practices and practitioners
  • Arts and activism knowledge/experience
  • Knowledge and experience in co-ordinating productions, events and exhibitions across different arts genres
  • Strong writing skills
  • Imaginative, energetic, innovative, hardworking
  • Experience as an educator would be a strong recommendation.
