NWU Presents Open Access Week 2024

Research constantly creates new information and knowledge. The results are widely published in journals, conference proceedings and reports to name a few and the web affords new forums for its communication.
Since the first statements regarding open access (OA) – the Budapest Open Access Initiative in February 2002 and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities – October 2003 open access has been the subject of discussion between academics, librarians, government and publishers.
OA content is online, freely accessible and encourage free exchange of knowledge and resources to widen access that might encourage creativity and also allow others to re-use the research. Anyone can benefit from wider access to research.
OA journals has become a recognised part of the scholarly communication landscape. Learning about OA will help you make informed choices about where to publish your work. The Library will be hosting a session at the campus in Potchefstroom: “Publishing with Predatory Journals dents your credibility to take an informed discussion on where to publish”.  Copyright and Open Access will also be handled during the launch of OA Week at our campus in Mahikeng.
With the rising journal costs and constrained library budgets we need to consider alternatives to display research results. Benefits of OA to researchers include for example, helping to provide evidence for impact and improved reputation for researchers and their host institution through increased citations.
