Job description
The energy research centre (ERC) at the University of Cape Town is one of South Africa’s leading institutions involved in energy research, employing about 28 people from a variety of backgrounds. We invite applications from suitably qualified people to join the centre as operations manager for the immediate appointment. The successful candidate will be reporting directly to the ERC director and assist group leaders in project management.
Responsibilities:
- Strategy and business: provide support to the director regarding operational matters, protocol and alignment of operations.
- Project management and administration: maintaining projects database, tracking and monitoring project milestones, activities and status of all contracts in order to support the project leaders.
- Financial management and administration: ensuring that financial controls are instituted and maintained and that financial reports are accurate reflections of the centre’s activities, including budgeting, financial transactions, financial reporting and investments.
- Organisational and HR management: to contribute to shaping a healthy successful organisation, through the effective supervision of the centre’s administrative staff.
- Media/library/information: to ensure the maintenance and development of a coherent working library system, which enables researchers to access information and disseminate information to the public.
- Conference/event organising: ensure effective organisation of conferences and other ERC events.
- Postgraduate administration: oversee postgraduate administrative activities.
Requirements
- Degree/diploma in management/advanced office management including appropriate accounting management courses, or equivalent.
- At least five years’ experience in the administration field, with sound numerical skills including appropriate accounting/finance experience, demonstrating a broad knowledge and understanding of financial and management accounting principles, with proven analytical and interpretive abilities.
- Proven project management skills.
- Proven staff management abilities.
- Human, organisational and communication skills: Must be a team player, and have the ability to interact successfully with internal and external clients at all levels; excellent organisation skills and the ability to establish priorities; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to exercise judgment and work with minimal supervision; excellent client service.
- Fundamental skills: Report writing, computer literacy in MS Office suite and email; high level of proficiency in MS Excel and ERP experience essential.
Advantageous
- Proficiency in SAP.
- Familiarity with MS-Project or equivalent package.
- Familiarity with a tertiary education environment.
- Project management skills applied in a research environment.
