An opportunity for a political reporter exists within our editorial department reporting to the news editor of The Citizen.
Purpose of the Job:
To ensure that The Citizen remains up to date in its coverage of political events on a daily basis and to contribute to this coverage for print and online platforms.
Main responsibilities:
- To coordinate all political coverage in consultation with the news desk.
- To submit comment and background articles.
- To direct coverage of local political issues at all three levels of government.
- To ensure fair and equitable coverage for all political parties and interest groups.
- To represent The Citizen at high profile political conferences and functions at the discretion of the editor.
Core competencies required:
Knowledge:
- An appropriate bachelor’s degree/diploma in journalism.
- Five years’ experience as a political reporter.
- A good contact base and understanding of local and international politics.
Skills:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Good people management skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Excellent relationship building skills.
- Thorough familiarity with social media.
Aptitude:
- Factual accuracy.
- An eye for detail.
- Ability to work under extreme pressure.
- Deadline driven.
- Tenacity.
- Ability to work long and irregular hours.
- Ability to write analysis pieces.
Other requirements:
- Valid drivers licence.
- Own vehicle.
