Research Internships at Robben-Island Museum 2024
The Robben-Island Museum implements a wide range of conservation, educational, tourist development, research, archiving and general heritage programmes that are designed to achieve its mandate; conserve the Island’s natural and cultural resources and heritage; and promote it as a platform for critical debate and life-long learning.
The Robben-Island Museum invites applications for 3 Research Internship positionscurrently available within its the HERITAGE Department.
The purpose of the opportunity is to assist the Research Unit with activities related to researching Robben Island’s history and context.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in historical research on Robben Island including gathering and analysis of information, conducting interviews and arranging site visits;
- Administer and update the research databases including capturing of data, scanning of documents and verifying information;
- Occasionally conduct Robben Island layered history in various archives/libraries to help with the narrative and interpretations;
- Transcribing of the recorded interviews;
- Logging of the recorded interviews;
- General administration and correspondence.
Requirements
- Degree with specialization in either Social studies, History, Archaeology or Post Graduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Studies. Honours degree would be an advantage;
- 1 year relevant experience
Technical skill/Knowledge:
- Drivers Licence (code 08);
- Fluency in 2 official languages;
- Proficient in computer packages;
- Broad understanding of South Africa’s political history.
