Commonwealth Scholarships tenable in the United Kingdom 2024/18
Commonwealth Scholarships 2024: Terms & Conditions
Selection Criteria
Guide to the online system
Universities of South Africa (UnivSA, formally HESA) has invited applications from South African citizens for the Commonwealth Scholarships tenable in the UK for the 2024/2025 academic year.
Applications may be in either of the following two categories for study in the UK:
- Taught Master’s courses (One Year) (excluding MBA)
- PhDs
Please note the Agency does not nominate candidates for:
- Distance Learning Scholarships to study UK Master’s degree courses in your home country.
- Academic Fellowships for mid-career academics to spend time at UK. universitiesProfessional Fellowships for mid-career professionals to spend time at a UK host organization.
- Split-site scholarship.
More information on these awards and other awards available from the Commission are available on the website www.dfid.gov.uk/cscuk.
It is an online application process (some details below, carefully reading the attached important docs as well).
The University may only nominate 10 applications from the list of applicants each year. Thus this is a highly competitive process both at RU, UnivSA and finally the UK final selection. From the applications received Rhodes may only recommend ten, thus we have a screening process to complete in order to send the top 10 to UnivSA. Thus the Rhodes closing date has to be earlier than UnivSA/online process – namely 14 October 2024.
UnivSA in turn will assess all applications received from the various tertiary institutions in South Africa and only a limited number will be nominated to the UK. The UK in turn will make a limited number of awards.
PLEASE READ the instructions and information below, as well as the attached documents (PDF’s) very carefully. You are welcome to pop in and chat to us if you are uncertain about any aspect.
Important points:
Any candidate who has not submitted an application via the EAS cannot be considered for a scholarship.
and once registered and logged in, you need to select “Rhodes” option, not “Rhodes direct”. To quote UnivSA “Thus choose the option University Rhodes (to CSC via UnivSA) in the EAS”.
- Hand in a printed completed copy to us, no later than Friday 14 October 2024, which will be forwarded to UnivSA initially.
(VNB: please do not look at dates on the attached documents or websites pertaining to Nov dates, these are the dates for the Univ to meet so as to sign off your application and complete the nominations process. So make sure you adhere to the 14 Oct Rhodes deadline please)
- Rhodes then sends nominations to UnivSA in Pretoria (early November). By end Jan 2024 they will select apps to send to the UK, who then advise by end April their final selection (they access your online application at their point, hence the online and paper apps!
- Email us to let us know you have applied so we can keep a list, x-ref that to the paper apps when they come in.
“The Electronic Application System (EAS) has automatically set the deadline for applications to be made via a University for 15 November 2024 (14 days prior to the closing date of the Nominating Agency).
This means that candidates applying via your University will not be allowed to apply after 15 November 2024, that is why we make our closing date earlier.
Other details:
- 1. Eligibility:
Eligibility requirements are outlined in the Scholarship Prospectus attached hereto. I would particularly draw your attention to the following:
- The Commission will look for evidence of high academic quality expected of Commonwealth scholars; intellectual and academic excellence will be paramount in all selections. Candidates studying a first degree are expected to hold at least upper second class honours level or a degree of second class (i.e. 70%+) by October 2017.
- Candidates should be able to take up the award in October 2024 as deferments are granted in the most exceptional circumstances, and in any event will not be considered for start dates beyond January 2024.
- Please note that if candidates for Master’s awards have undertaken any of their university education outside their home country, they will be asked to state how it was funded and how the education differed from that in their home country.
- All PhD candidates must provide a supporting statement from a named supervisor from at least one of the UK universities to which they are applying.
Awards are tenable at any UK institution of higher education with whom the Commission has a part-funding agreement. A list of these institutions can be found at http://bit.ly/cscuk-uk-universities. Candidates are expected to state at least one and up to three preferred institution(s) on the application form. The final decision on a host institution will be made by the Commission. In recent years, placement of successful candidates has sometimes been delayed by the process of gaining admission to their host university. For this reason, candidates must submit independent applications for admission directly to their preferred institutions in the UK in advance of their scholarship application. Where offers of admission have been obtained, these should be included with the nominations, and any subsequent correspondence copied to us.
The Commission will not offer awards to scholars already close to completing a doctorate in their own country, though awards may be offered to complete doctoral studies already underway in the UK.
- 2. Selection Criteria:
Final selection of candidates and host institutions will be made by the UK Commission based on the nominations from the South African Agency. Once again, they will be seeking candidates of the highest academic quality, who demonstrate a real capacity to make a difference to their home country on completion of the award. The main selection criteria are academic merit, the quality of the study plan and the potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country.
Applications which do not meet the academic criteria will not be considered by the South African Selection Panel. We receive substantially more nominations than scholarships available, and for this reason, the selection process has become very competitive over the years. It should be noted that even applicants who meet the academic criteria may not be finally selected by the Selection Panel due to the competitive nature of these scholarships.
The Selection Committee has become concerned in recent years with the way in which papers are increasingly arriving in an incomplete state and has instructed its secretariat to render ineligible applications which do not arrive in the manner requested. Such incomplete applications will not be considered by the committee.
The following information should be noted by ALL applicants:
- The EAS ask each applicant to upload scanned passport-size photograph, transcripts, birth certificate (copy of green ID will do) and any letters received from a UK institution listed in their application form.
- References: VERY IMPORTANT
The EAS will send an e-mail to each referee with a link to the applicants application form to write a reference. The e-mail is only sent when the application is submitted and therefore candidates are encouraged to this well in advance in order for the referees to have time to submit their references before the closing date of 14 October 2024. The onus is on the applicant to ensure that references are submitted online and made available to Rhodes to link with your application so facilitate continued processing before sending onto UnivSA. Applications received without the requested references will not be considered.
(ideally, they need to be done by 16 October, so that when we make our recommendations, we have reports to refer to as well, both visible on the online app, as well as signed letter headed copies we can add to your paper copy we send to UnviSA. Please liaise with your referees now so that whilst you are preparing your application they can start preparing your referee report well in advance (i.e. now) so that they can merely cut and paste when the EAS email arrives requested the report once you have submitted your application. The EAS email will give a later date than the 14 Oct, so please explain to them to ignore that date and rather work to our date please. The hard copy needs to reach us with your application on the 14 Oct closing date. It can be placed in a sealed envelope marked “confidential referee report – Commonwealth application” and your name.
Take time in preparing your application, seek advice from those who you may know that have received such scholarships, as well as an academic who is prepared to read through your application and advise accordingly. We will also look at your application if you come into the office and will gladly give comments and advice.
DO NOT LEAVE THIS TO THE LAST MINUTE, START NOW. This term is very short! |
