Lecture Title:
Transgressive Learning in Times of Climate Change
Abstract:
Learning in educational and social institutions for most of the last century, was focused on learning what is already there via processes of acculturation. In times of great complexity and uncertainty, such as those that humanity is now confronting, new approaches to learning are needed that allow people to learn what is ‘not yet there’. Such learning is transformative and transgressive. It must challenge the current status quo and taken-for-granted assumptions and norms if real transformation is to take place towards a socially just, sustainable future. In this research lecture I reflect on the emergence of the transgressive learning paradigm in environment and sustainability education research, and consider its potential for supporting transformative agency in times of climate change.
All are welcome to attend.
